Watch a Deconstruction of 808 State’s ‘Pacific 707’ from Sarm Music Village

Last November, Point Blank teamed up with SARM Music Village for a day-long event featuring masterclasses and workshops from some of the best producers in the game, including by Trevor Horn, who himself deconstructed the classic track ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Along with a Q&A with Trevor Horn, the day also saw Point Blank’s lead course developer Ski Oakenfull deconstruct the 808 State’s Acid House classic ‘Pacific 707’ which was released on ZTT. Watch the remarkable demonstration below.

‘Pacific 707’, and the original version ‘Pacific State’, led by Graham Massey’s iconic saxophone lead, is one of the most revered tracks in dance music history which, in mainstream appeal, aped almost any other tune from the Hacienda era. It was written by 808 State, which at the time was made up of Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson (better known as A Guy Called Gerald, himself the man behind ‘Voodoo Ray’, another track to rival ‘Pacific 707’ in seminality). A masterpiece of syncopation, no other track embodies the second summer of love in 1989 than ‘Pacific 707’.

In this deconstruction, Ski uses Ableton Live to build each element of the track from scratch (time permitting). We learn what instruments were used, including the Roland TR-909, D-50, SH-101 and Juno-106, the Casio F2-1 and the Akai S-900, before Ski begins with the famously warm chords that open the track. We learn that the track actually straddles two keys, that the famous ‘Loon bird’ sample came from disc 22 of the E-Mu Emulator II library, and that Ski finally learned how 808 State made the piano roll sound at the track’s beginning from Graham Massey himself. For more deconstructions like these, check out our YouTube Channel.

Ghostbusters Ableton Live Deconstruction (FFL!)

Making music can be terrifying. The endless plugins, options and influences mean starting a track can be tough, and finishing it can be even harder. At PB, our Music Composition module and accompanying deconstructions aim to simplify the process, taking well known tracks and breaking them down into how they were written, the notes and chords used and what goes in to the arrangement. Today it’s the turn of one of recorded music’s most impressive compositions: Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters.

Be it the unique synths, the catchy lyrics or even just the brilliant music video, it’s a timeless classic the goes far beyond the movie it was made to accompany. For today’s FFL Halloween special, Ski Oakenfull is taking on the mammoth challenge of deconstructing this masterpiece. Join us at 1pm BST to find out if he can do it!

Screen Shot 2016-10-28 at 10.51.16After writing the Ghostbusters theme, Ray Parker Jr took a vow of silence, knowing he’d never achieve anything close to its brilliance again

Deconstructions like this one are exactly what you’ll learn on our Electronic Music Composition module, part of our online Diploma course. They’re a great way to learn music theory and composition, as well as understand the building blocks of tracks. Furthermore, if you want to learn more sound design, production, mixing, mastering and composition tips, our Online Master Diploma course is perfect for you. Taken from anywhere in the world for up to 64 weeks, it’s one of our most comprehensive courses and has been taken by the likes of Claude Von Stroke, Plastician and Jon Rundell. Find out more here.

New Order – Blue Monday Ableton Live Deconstruction @ SONAR+D 2016

Blue Monday is one of the most iconic songs of all times. Bridging the disco era with what became a house and techno explosion in the UK, New Order created a timeless classic that’s still referenced today as one of the most influential tracks of all time. Last month New Order headlined SONAR festival in Barcelona and when we were asked to take part in SONAR+D – the educational arm of the famous festival – it was a no-brainer to take on the New Order classic in one of our world-famous deconstructions.

We enlisted the help of deconstruction maestro and PB instructor Ski Oakenfull – watch the video above and download the project used by Ski here.

IMS College Malta Round Up with Pete Tong, Eli & Fur and More

Nine years since its foundation in Ibiza, International Music Summit has become a global institution. While the homegrown conference continues to be the landmark event, its spread its wings around the world, setting up shop in Singapore, Los Angeles and now one of electronic music’s new homes: Malta.

Taking a slightly different slant, IMS College Malta focussed on education, and who better to head up the programming than Point Blank? We were invited to host panels, workshops and networking sessions with the next generation of music industry elite.

IMG_2315Sound Advice lawyer and industry veteran Robert Horsfall gave the opening speech to a
packed room at IMS College Malta

Music lawyer and industry veteran Robert Hosfall was first to take the podium, quoting his peers with some excellent advice around the Five Pieces of the Jigsaw to success. Next up was PB’s Declan McGlynn interviewing dance music legend Pete Tong for the keynote opener. He talked the early days of his career, what radio means to him, what he looks for in a demo and where he sees the future of the industry. Stay tuned to the PB YouTube channel for the full interview coming soon, and for those looking to get into the music industry check out our full range of courses.

7e9c5fa9-fc0b-4066-a200-73b1723f1216Pete Tong MBE talked about his long career, the early days of radio, A&Ring hit records, discovering Frankie Knuckles, signing Goldie and much more

Eli & Fur joined us on stage for the second of our keynote interviews. They spoke about their time working with Brian Higgins and the pop powerhouse Xenomania before breaking away and starting their own production duo. They also passed on their advice for anyone starting their own label and how to recover from a bad gig.

b1db2393-cdb6-4bac-88ee-c877df40f31aProduction and DJ duo Eli & Fur took to the stage for an interview with Point Blank’s Declan McGlynn

Later Point Blank lead course developer and instructor Ski Oakenfull deconstructed Duke Dumont’s summer anthem Ocean Drive using Ableton Live and Push 2 before an industry panel featuring Pete Tong, Eli & Fur, CAA Talent’s Laura Newton and PR company Listen Up!’s Lucy Allen. In it we talked about highs and lows on the music industry, artist development and the importance and power of team work. It was an inspiring talk – subscribe to  the PB YouTube channel to watch the video in full.

IMG_2773L-R: Laura Newton (CAA), Lucy Allen (Listen Up!), Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1), Eli & Fur

To wrap up the busy day, we invited DJ, producer and PB instructor Stefano Ritteri to give a masterclass on Creative Workflow. We spent the previous day exploring the island collecting various samples to then create a groove from using the Teenage Engineering OP-1 and Ableton Live. Watch the video below to see what we got up to and make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch the full masterclass.

What would a dance music event be without a party? Once the day had wrapped up at the Dragonara Westin, it was time to head to Uno Village for a very special b2b set from Diynamic don Solomun and Pete Tong himself. It was a brilliant party, highlighting both DJ’s eclectic tastes and the growth of Malta’s dance music scene.

The first IMS College Malta proved that you never stop learning, with attendees young and old coming together for an inspiring day. With graduates and current students from all over the globe making their way to St Julian Bay, it was great to see so many familiar faces and an honour to curate the event. See you next year, and for those looking to find their own way into the music industry, check out our full range of courses.
