Dance Legend Pete Tong Learns Native Instruments Maschine at Point Blank

We were delighted to welcome the legendary Pete Tong to our London school recently for a crash course in making music with Native Instruments’ Maschine. He linked up with our expert Maschine instructor, Paul Ressel, for an intensive one to one session. Check out the short video we made of his visit below, and don’t forget to take a look at our Maschine course, taught in our very own Native-Instruments supported studio. You can also take this course as part of our BA (Hons) Degree programme.

Pete Tong has been one of dance music’s most prominent champions, beginning with his early career as a soul DJ at BBC Radio Medway and Invicta Radio. However it was with the early electronic music of the rave era that Tong became a household name, as integral to the scene as Messrs Rampling and Oakenfold, the latter of which coined the now ubiquitous rhyming-slang phrase: ‘it’s all gone Pete Tong’. He moved to Radio 1 at the beginning of the 90s, and his Friday night show became the most iconic radio broadcast to cover dance music, an accolade which hasn’t been surpassed today. Here, he launched the Essential Mix, and supplying one remains one of the biggest milestones in a DJ’s career, with recent iconic entries coming from the likes of Midland, Nicolas Jaar and Helena Hauff. He’s visited us before, and as always it was a pleasure to have the lord of dance in the building.

Whilst we taught Pete Tong the basics and some of the many tricks and features on the new Maschine Mk 3, on our comprehensive 3-month programme we teach students everything from the very basics of setting up your unit, making beats, arrangement, sampling and synthesis, right the way through to live performance. It’s an incredibly powerful tool and the possibilities are virtually endless, so we know why Pete was so keen to learn the ropes.

Get an Insight into our Radio Classes (Radio 1, Sony, Mi Soul + More)

If you follow this blog, or indeed Point Blank at all, you’ll know how passionate we are about radio. From Madam X to Gemma Cairney and Monki, some of our most successful alumni came through these classes in London, and the landscape of internet radio tells you all you need to know about the longevity and dynamism of the medium (thanks in part to one Ollie Ashley, another former student of ours who went on to form Radar Radio). As such we’re always striving to keep our radio courses on the pulse of what’s happening, and one of the many ways we do this is to enable our students to gain access to some of the biggest radio studios and have them spend time with those who have been there and done it. Take a look for yourself with this photo tour of our latest excursions.

BBC Radio 1xtra

As part of the Station Identity and Branding class, expert instructor Bailey took our students to the BBC’s Broadcasting House to one of the biggest influences within broadcast for electronic music – Radio 1xtra.

Mi Soul Radio

Bailey also took students along to Mi Soul Radio, which covers London, Manchester and Brighton on DAB radio, and is home to the likes of Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson among others.

Radio Class Guest Masterclasses: Shan McGinley (Snapchat) + more

SISTER Radio and Snapchat’s Shan McGinley (shown below) was a recent guest masterclass in radio classes. Other guests this term include Ami Bennett (Executive Producer – Somethin’ Else), Elise Cobain (Playlist Programming at Sony) and Alex Lawless (Producer at Radio 1), giving students additional real-life industry perspective alongside their expert instructors. Check out our in-depth piece on Shan’s visit here.

Students at Point Blank are presented with industry opportunities and guest masterclasses across a wide range of our courses so if radio isn’t your thing, you can find out more about our courses in music production, DJ, songwriting or the music industry. Student Success December 2017: WABE, Anthony Roofe

Each month, we catch up with Point Blank students and alumni to showcase their successes since studying with us, giving you an insight into how music industry careers are established and nurtured right here at Point Blank. In our Student Success December 2017, we caught up with WABE, a Sicilian house duo, and Anthony Roofe, who’s story of getting his track played by Annie Mac is a testament to perseverence. Check out our LondonLos AngelesIbizaMumbai and Online course pages to begin your own journey in the music industry.

WABE (Kato Management) – <a href="<a href="https://www.pointblankmusicschool.com/courses/london/music-production-courses/music-composition-certificate/ "target="_blank"Music Composition

WABE are primary schoolfriends Ale Murphy and Signor Jenk, who grew up in Palermo, Sicily. Both listened mainly to rock music from the 60s and 70s and they played in garage punk and ska bands for much of their early years. They started DJing in the early 2000s and began WABE as a to explore their interest in house and techno. As Ale, who studied Music Composition with us puts it: “WABE is about creating catchy melodies and atmospheres that put the listener in a dreamy state of mind. Also, because everything starts with a live performance, the live feeling has to be the core element in our music.”

On Point Blank, he said this: “I loved everything about PB. The contents of the course are just perfect for someone who wants to do music for a living. The environment and the atmosphere were great and the teachers amazing. You can get a lot from your classes at PB but the key is you have to be motivated!”

Look out for more WABE gigs in London in the new year, and follow them on Facebook

Anthony Roofe – <a href="<a href="https://www.pointblankmusicschool.com/courses/london/music-production-courses/ba-hons-music-production-and-sound-engineering-3-yr/" target="_blank"BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering

Anthony Roofe is a current degree student here at Point Blank who’s career took an exciting turn recently at a BBC Music event. Anthony told us what happened in his own words: “I went to a BBC music conference where big artists, producers and DJs would do masterclass talks about how they got into the industry and advice for us. During Annie Mac’s talk, loads of people were asking to give her demos. I realised I wasn’t going to get picked with my hand up with a huge crowd all putting theirs up. I just walked to the front and just put my USB on the desk next to her. By the end, she had a mountain of demos. But later that evening she tweeted me saying she wanted to play my track on her main show on Radio 1.”

“I currently have the Radio 1 track now signed as part of an EP to a very well established label that I can reveal details of soon. I have other releases planned as well as more and more bookings coming in. Let’s just say you might catch me in Ibiza next year!”

Anthony’s story illustrates the impact that a combination of talent and being at the right place at the right time can have. Follow Anthony on Soundcloud or Facebook.

Successes such as these are not uncommon among our students and alumni, and the common denominator is Point Blank. We can teach you how to DJ like the best of them at any of our schools. If you’d like to learn how to produce, then we can build your skills from the ground up. Our most comprehensive course, our BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering is accredited by Middlesex University, as is our online alternative.
