P-LASK & MVIENIGHT – ‘Feel Love’: Out Now! [Stream + DL]

‘Feel Love’ is the latest to come out on the PB Music imprint, a collaboration from LA-based producers P-LASK and MVIENIGHT. A classic House banger with clear Chicago influences, ‘Feel Love’ is now available to download on iTunes and to stream on Spotify. Check out our interview with P-LASK below.

Do you have a musical background? What is your experience in music so far?

I’m not very proficient at playing any instruments.  However, I did sing in concert choirs and choral groups throughout high school and college, and this helped me learn a lot about music theory.  I have also been DJing for nearly 20 years and producing for a little over a decade.

What first piqued your interest in music production?

After DJing for so many years, I got to a point where I figured “Hey, I can make this stuff too!”  I think a desire to combine all of the sounds/elements that I liked from disparate styles of electronica (techno, house, trance, ambient, breakbeat, drum & bass, etc.) was a driving factor in my journey toward producing.

Where did you draw your inspiration from for the track?

I’m definitely heavily inspired by the classic house sounds of Chicago, New York, Detroit, the UK, etc.  Of course, I try to modernize it a bit too.  But this is a sound that has survived (and thrived) for so long.  I can’t put my finger on it, but there is definitely something special (maybe even spiritual) about this type of music.  It’s timeless, not disposable, like so much of the modern electronic music coming out today.  You can hear a house track that came out 20 years ago, and it still holds up.

What did you use in the production of the track? (any specific hardware/software/plugins etc)

I’m an Ableton Certified Trainer, so Ableton Live (and Push), have been at the core of my studio for a while now.  I think on this track, I also used my Roland JP8080 (great 90s synth for pads and leads), and I sampled a few drum sounds from the Roland TR-8 (another one of my studio toys).  I’m a minimalist when it comes to plugins, but I’ve definitely been using XFER Serum quite a bit.  I was fortunate enough to beta test the softsynth before it came out, and I designed some of the factory presets for it as well.  It’s also become a “go-to” tool for me.

Did you have a particular vision before you began?

I don’t always have a particular vision in mind when I go into a track’s production.  But I WILL usually spend at least one session just choosing the sounds I want to put together.  I joke with my students that I’m like Bob Ross (famous late American painter, with a show on PBS) choosing his colors at the beginning of each episode before he starts painting.  I think the initial development of a “soundscape” for your track can really expedite the actual production/arrangement process.  Live’s Session View is like my massive “color palette” whenever I start a new track!

What advice would you give other full-time students or professionals who are looking to find success in the music industry in their spare time?

I think the best advice I can give to ANY producer (beginner, or advanced) is to keep making music.  And I don’t mean start an idea, then get tired of it and scrap it.  I mean full-on FINISHING tracks.  Do this as much as possible, and as quickly as possible, and don’t judge the results.  Just get the idea out, arrange it, then move onto the next thing.  Not everything you finish is going to get released.  Build up a “portfolio” of 100+ finished tracks.  Most of them are going to be crap, but who cares?  Then you pick and choose the best ones to put out.  It’s really all about quantity over quality.  Quality will come if you stay disciplined and keep working at your craft.

Are you working on any other projects at the moment?

I’m always busy! As I’m typing these answers, I am literally listening to a finished mix that’s coming out on a new label based in Los Angeles, called Krafted DTLA, this Fall.  These guys have been working closely with Toolroom Records and I’m super excited to get the track out with them.  My partner David (MVIENIGHT) and myself are also currently working on an EP.  I’m in the middle of working on a sample pack that will hopefully be available to everyone via Splice Sounds very soon.

Check out the track, ‘Feel Love’ on PB Music. You can keep up with P-Lask on his Soundcloud page.

If you’re interested in learning more production and mixing techniques, we cover all of this and more on our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree. Plugin of The Week: Eventide Ultratap Delay

Point Blank resident plugin tester JC Concato is back with another instalment of our Plugin of the Week series, this time looking at Eventide’s Ultratrap Delay. Currently on sale at $49 until September 5th.

Ultratrap began as a factory preset in Eventide’s SP2016 rack mount audio processor back in 1982. It was later included in the legendary H3000 HArmonizer effects processor as well as the DSP4000, H8000 and H9 effects pedal. Now, after 35 years, the Ultratrap is available to us all in plugin form.

Optimized to work within your DAW of choice and with 150 presets, the Ultratrap delay has been ported directly from the award-winning H9 Harmonizer. With it, you can:

  • Manipulate effects in real-time using The Ribbon to transition seamlessly between two settings of any combination of controls.
  • Using the innovative Slurm control, smear taps together or modulate them to create truly unique reverbs.
  • Create drastic changes in effect and sound by assigning the HotSwitch to an alternate version of the current settings.
  • Use up to 64 taps to create simple repeats or morph delays into chorus and reverb.
  • Speed up or slow down the rhythmic space between taps using the Spread knob.
  • Use the onboard LFOs and envelopes to chop the sound source into stuttered rhythms.
  • Control the stereo image of taps to alternate between hard-panned and mono.
  • Sync the Length and/or Chop LFO speed to the DAW session.
  • Use Mix Lock to scroll through presets while keeping the wet-dry mix constant.
  • Optimized for live use with MIDI control of The Ribbon and Tap Tempo for quick meta control on the fly.

For the full breakdown, watch JC and Carly dissect Ultratrap at 4.00pm GMT in the video above.

In our latest tutorial series, Point Blank course developer Dan Herbert focuses on using Max for Live plugin BEAP – available as part of Ableton Suite – to create your own synths, sequencers and more. Dan Herbert teaches the Sound Design module on our online BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree, on which you can learn everything you need to take your productions to the next level. In part one of this tutorial, Dan Herbert introduces us to BEAP, a platform for creating modular instruments to use in Ableton Live. Dan walks us through the steps necessary to create a simple synthesiser, detailing how to connect up an oscillator, VCA, filter and output correctly and showing us around the interface.

In episode 2, Dan dives deeper into BEAP, looking at hooking up some additional oscillators and a mixer to the subtractive synth from episode 1. Dan walks us through adding a sequencer, showing us some useful tips and tricks and how to store patterns, before going on to create a granular synth and manipulating it with an LFO. Behind the Scenes at Point Blank: Carly Foxx (A&R and Content)

At Point Blank, it isn’t just our expert instructors who are active music industry professionals. A&R / Content Executive Carly Hordern has been producing music and DJing under the moniker Carly Foxx for the last 7 years, with releases on Danse Club records as well as playing top venues and events including Warehouse Project, Festival No. 6, Wilderness and Sankeys. Having worked as a music supervisor for 4 years before joining us at Point Blank, Carly has achieved 360-degree success in the music industry. She continues to release music and DJ regularly as well as balancing a full-time career with Point Blank using her A&R and Content-focused skills. Carly is going to be taking over the Point Blank Instagram for the next week. You can keep up with her on her Facebook and Soundcloud pages and download her latest track, ‘Call My Name‘, on Beatport.

What is your role at Point Blank?

Lucky for me, I have a super fun & diverse role, splitting my time between producing and presenting video content for our YouTube channel, artist liaison & A&R.

How do you find new music for DJ’ing and also for finding the next new talent as part of your role at Point Blank?

By very consistently listening to new music via promos, blogs, tastemaker playlists, film & tv soundtracks and trawling through Soundcloud. Specialist radio shows are great, although I rarely find the time to listen to radio shows. Just talking to other people in music is another way to discover new music.

What makes a track stand out for you?

Melody or melodic elements, unusual sounds, layers and production elements, quirky vocals, timeless song writing.

What have been the highlights so far of your time at Point Blank?

There’s been a few! Interviewing DVS1 at IMS Ibiza was a highlight. I’m a big fan and he’s an absolute legend. He has such a great energy which I found really inspiring. Travelling to India for ADE in Mumbai was pretty special too! We’re launching a new record label soon which I have been A&Ring for. This has been an amazing process and I’ve learnt so much already. Our first release is by an incredible artist called Amani. We had a great connection from day one and laugh an awful lot.  I’ve loved working with her and her producer David.

Do you have a background in music? What did you grow up listening to?

I grew up playing the guitar and learning music at school, although I’ve forgotten most of the theory! My mum played the drums and had a pretty impressive record collection, so I grew up listening to a lot of music which was influenced by her. The Doors, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, The B52s, Sonny & Cher, Elton John, Moby and lots of Australian folk and rock music. When I was 17 I started raving, discovered dance music; listening to Metro Area, Tiefschwarz, Tiga etc. When I moved to London I started listening to disco and deeper US styles of house and Detroit techno; styles which are prevalent in my DJ sets.

What made you want to move to London?

Nothing in particular – my best friend and I were really young and looking for an adventure! I knew I wouldn’t be going home even before I had left. I just knew I would love it!

How does the music scene in London compare to that in Sydney?

There’s some great music that comes out of Australia but, very sadly, Sydney doesn’t have much of nightlife scene anymore. There are a few awesome parties like Mad Racket and Sash which have been around a long time now but due to Sydney’s lock out laws and general nanny state mentality, they’re few and far between. What’s special about London is how diverse and multicultural this city is. There are very few cities in the world which come close to it. You can go out and listen to so many different types of music, every night of the week and meet people from all over the world and from so many different walks of life.

Who are your musical icons/influences?

In dance music, definitely Nina Kraviz. I love how utterly original she is. The music she makes is pretty simple in terms of production but what makes it so special is the raw emotion you hear; something which I feel is often lacking in dance music.

What new music do you like? Who are you listening to right now?

Peggy Gou, Kevin Morby, Park Hotel and Ninasonik. God Colony blow my mind – if you haven’t already, check them out.

How did you get into the music industry?

I left school came to London and worked as a nanny for 7 years and during this time I started to DJ. I never really thought about working in the music industry because it never felt like an option. I had only worked with kids; I had no contacts and no experience – just a good ear for music. A friend of mine suggested I go for a job at the music company of a friend of hers. I had no idea what I was doing but managed to get the job and worked for 4 years as a music supervisor, placing music on TV commercials. I left there and started at Point Blank in January this year.

What advice would you give to up and coming producers/DJs

You have to work hard, be consistent and be very patient.  I think having a good, positive attitude goes a long way. People want to work with other people who have a good vibe and energy about them. Get out from behind the computer; meet people, work with other people and gain as much industry experience as you can. It’s the people that you meet in real life that are going to help you along the way.

How do you balance working full time and DJing/producing?

By being pretty sensible and making sacrifices. I don’t drink much, I do yoga three times a week and I dedicate most of my time outside of PB to my own music. It’s just about being committed and prioritising work over other things, which is easy for me because I love what I do.

What have been the highlights of your DJ and production career?

My first ever release on Danse Club records, which included a remix from DJ T, was a big highlight. A first release is always exciting! Playing at Joris Voorn’s ANTS party at Warehouse Project last year was definitely a big one as a DJ.

What has been your most embarrassing DJ experience?

There are many to choose from!  DJing at a dog show probably wasn’t my finest moment. The brief was 4 hours of music, playing only songs with lyrics about dogs. I’ve also played at a bird show. Lols!

Are you working on any upcoming projects?

I have a forthcoming EP on Fred P’s new vinyl imprint, Private Society, which will include a classic Fred P reshape. This is the most incredible thing for me. I’ve been buying Fred’s records for years, so to be released on his label is such an honour!
