Point Blank Ibiza is Back This Summer with Two New Courses – Enrol Today

Summer in Ibiza… for lovers of dance music and club culture what better place is there spend the hot months than the beautiful White Isle. We certainly can’t think of anywhere, which is why we’re back again this summer and expanding on the first round of courses we offered in 2017. With our first courses underway, 2018 has seen the introduction of Advanced DJ/Producer and DJ/Radio, as well as the return of the DJ/Producer course from last year. On these courses we throw you right into the heart of what the island is all about, giving you a chance to go beyond the typical sun, sea and clubbing experiences and actually step behind the booth yourself in some of the island’s most iconic clubs. You’ll get discounts and freebies for loads of parties too, so there’s really no better way to enjoy the island.

We know a trip to Ibiza can be one of the most spectacular experiences of your life. The gorgeous landscape, famed sunny sunshine beaches and of course the world-famous clubs combine to give an experience like no other. We also know what it’s like to share those moments in Amnesia, Pacha or Space (RIP) and wish you could be standing at the other side of the booth. That’s why we decided to open Point Blank Ibiza and offer the chance to take the first steps on that path. Check out some photos below from last year of students playing on the rooftop of Ocean Drive Hotel, and in-class for a flavour of what’s on offer.

The original DJ/Producer course also returns, so whatever your level, we can offer you a fortnight like no other.

All courses come with a host of fantastic perks thrown in. There’s free software worth a total of £619, free travel to and from the idyllic setting of the Can Blau music school and fantastic deals with a choice of hotels including a special luxury option. Students also get several chances to play out at clubs and bars on the island and, with our included Point Blank wristband, they receive free, discounted or VIP entry to a host of the island’s best venues. Can a Season In Ibiza Help Your DJ Career?

If you’re contemplating a season in Ibiza, Point Blank can help you kickstart your trip with our new two-week Ibiza course. Held at Can Blau Music School, nestled in an idyllic village near San Jose, you will be taught the fundamentals of music production and DJing by our expert instructors and provided with a host of exclusive networking opportunities. This course can give you a real head start when it comes to working in Ibiza over the summer, with students having the opportunity to play at our closing parties, held at the Ocean Drive Hotel and Hotel Pacha, (yes – that Pacha!).

Can Blau – the home of Point Blank Ibiza

Living in Ibiza for five months sounds like a dream come true for many people. The main clubbing season runs from May through to October each year where thousands flock to the island looking to work, and the occasional party. But if you’re a DJ determined on taking your career to the next level, can a season in Ibiza enhance your chances of success? Danny Savage, an event promoter, DJ and entrepreneur from Yorkshire thinks so, as he shares his story with Point Blank on moving to the Spanish island in 2007.

‘It was May 2007. I’d only just set up my first club night, ‘Filth’ in Wakefield. It was a hard decision to leave, but I’d been talking about it for years until eventually, I plucked up the courage to go through with it. I sold almost everything I owned at a car boot sale (including my prized Adidas Classics collection!) I even threw away my collection of old mix tapes, which still haunts me to this day. It was a fresh start with new opportunities in sight, and obviously loads of sunshine and fun times ahead.’

Reasons why hosting an event can launch your DJ career

‘My plan was to go to Ibiza and network the hell out of it – being omnipresent – meeting everyone I could in order to improve my club night and chances of success as a DJ. Like many, I wanted to go out there and DJ straight away but I quickly discovered this wasn’t easy. My girlfriend at the time and I had to sleep on a lilo on a mate’s balcony for a week until we found a place of our own to stay. I got my first job as a ticket seller for The Zoo Project in San Antonio. Selling tickets to holidaymakers wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do, but I had to start somewhere.

The Zoo Project

I was pretty good at selling on the street, but I spent all my days walking around the dirty streets of San Antonio stopping people and pitching to them, it was quite demoralising. Then one night I was back at our apartment on my laptop. A mate in Leeds messaged me on Facebook saying he was flying over this week and could he have a load of discount Zoo Project tickets? There was a tidy €150 profit in it for me. Nice and easy! It got me thinking there could be a future in this after all. So I decided to post a status asking who was coming over to Ibiza that summer, and I got a whole load of replies with dates. Then I started planning a calendar on who was coming on what dates so I could sell them tickets, it was as simple as just messaging them the week before to make sure they were coming to the Zoo. Most of them were in large groups, which was certainly happy days for my bank balance!

What started as a tedious, exhausting job ended up pocketing me over €1000 per week. I even managed to fund a party back in the UK and fly back for it during the summer! By then I’d built up an extensive network of connections in Ibiza: I was on the guestlist for any party I wanted, having got to know many of the key promoters working on the island, fueled by my idea of being omnipresent (everywhere, always!). I even started building an email database of contacts that I’d met on the Island, planning for the following summer. I was the top ticket seller out of a team of 60. I’d had amazing summer and met a load of new friends and made new connections. I’d still not managed to bag a DJ set at any of the big clubs, though!’

The second summer in Ibiza

‘During the winter I worked hard turning my club night ‘Filth’ into what was to become a Leeds clubbing institution. I kept in touch with the Zoo Project guys and even co-promoted a few parties back in the UK with them. The following summer I was offered my own ticket-selling team, my own arena at the Zoo Project and 15% shares in the brand. I was buzzing: I’d only been promoting for a year and here I was with my own arena in Ibiza, managing my own teams of promotional staff. To top it off, me and a few mates decided to rent a pimp villa for the summer, right on the sea front. The infamous ‘Filth Villa’ was born.

The opening party at The Filth Villa

As you can imagine, life was amazing. I began DJing all over the island at small venues, private parties, West End bars, the super clubs of Space, Eden, Es Paradise; I even got a gig playing in the toilets at Manumission! It was all good fun and I met so many contacts from all over the world. We had regular villa parties where world-famous DJs would play from a window looking out onto our pool. Midway through the summer however, the Zoo Project arrangement went a little sour when one of my ticket selling managers stole €2500 of ticket money. He ran off back to the UK and I parted company with the Zoo. Ibiza is amazing, but there’s still some dodgy characters over there and even good people can get themselves into sticky situations due to the lifestyle and pressure of earning money to survive the summer.

Instead of working for Zoo Project I decided to hire the Zoo from the venue owner and throw my own mini-festival. I called it ‘I Love Leeds Festival’. I brought together all my DJ friends & promoters from the Leeds club scene and promoted this on Facebook whilst living in Ibiza. It was targeted purely to Leeds clubbers, but the Leeds scene was that good back then that there were people from all over the world attending. It was mental! One of the best parties I’ve ever hosted. I sold over 1000 tickets and people in Leeds still talk about it now, 9 years on.

Danny Savage at the controls

Off the back of my Festival, I was asked to host a room for Carl Cox at Space. Playing at Space was a lifelong dream so to host a whole room with all my mates playing for Carl Cox was mind-blowing. To end another amazing summer, we had our final Filth Villa party of the year. We had a ‘Neverland’ theme with fire breathers and fireworks on the roof. It was talked about all over the Island, so much so that 50 Guardia Civil raided us and closed the party down. I spent another three years living in Ibiza, including two winters. I even ran my club nights back in the UK from my laptop at the Filth Villa in Ibiza all winter.

Closing at The Filth Villa

So did Ibiza improve my career as a DJ? Yes. Most definitely. I owe a lot of my success to my time in Ibiza. I’ve played at some of the best clubs and festivals in the world through the contacts I’d built up from the island I call my second home.’

Is a season right for me?

‘As you can see above I made the most of my trip to Ibiza. My idea of relentless networking most certainly worked. That was always my aim and it helped to improve my career significantly. If you’re considering going out there my advice is to take my approach. See it as a networking opportunity. Go there, be sociable, meet as many people as you can and make sure you’ve got the talent that matches your enthusiasm. You just never know what doors it might open.’

Point Blank Instructor Spotlight: Sweatson Klank

At Point Blank, you can expect to be taught by some of the best in the business. Each of our instructors is selected for their combination of talent, music industry experience and tangible success – which they pass on to you in the classroom. Each is a true professional in their field and our team in Los Angeles is no exception. For this Instructor Spotlight, we will be interviewing Music Production instructor Tom Wilson, aka Sweatson Klank, on his new release, a remix of Deep Forest’s ‘Sing With The Birds’, out now on Playground Records.

Tom Wilson has a wealth of experience in the music industry, having worked on composing music for apps, video games, commercials, television and film and working with brands such as Nike, Puma, Reebok, Novation, Ableton, Native Instruments and more. As Sweatson Klank, he has shared the stage with some incredibly talented musicians, like Mos Def, Just Blaze, Kode 9, Little Dragon and Flying Lotus to name a few and has been called upon as a Music Supervisor, Curator & DJ for some of the leading brands in Entertainment, Film, Fashion and Lifestyle. An LA legend in his own right, Sweatson Klank has releases and remixes on labels like Sony and Warp with his sound being championed by Gilles Peterson, Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs, as well as being a regular feature in the festival scene having played at Coachella, Sonar, Low-End Theory and more.

This broad range of invaluable experience is ever growing, most recently in the form of a remix for Grammy Award winning Deep Forest. Sweatson Klank’s remix of ‘Sing With The Birds’ will feature on Deep Forest’s upcoming remix album, out on Playground Records. We caught up with him in the interview below:

How did you first get into production?

I used to play guitar and bass in little bands when I was a kid. When I first got to university I played in some bands and quickly realised that I always wanted to play the role of conductor and producer. I would tell all the other people in the band how and what to play. As you can imagine, no one liked that! Not long after I went to a party where I saw a DJ completely controlling the whole crowd and vibe of the party with 2 turntables and a mixer… I had an epiphany. I knew right then that this was my calling. I begged the DJ to let me try mixing for this crowd of about 300 people at the party, he laughed and told me to bug off. I kept hassling him and a couple hours later he gave in and told me if I wanted to make a fool of myself to go ahead. I had never touched a DJ set up in my life and I knew nothing about mixing. Somehow, the first mix I did was perfect and the crowd went crazy! Of course, my next mix was a total train wreck but from that moment on I was hooked!! I started DJing and quickly got gigs. The natural next step was to learn to produce the tracks i was DJing. I got a drum machine and a sampler shortly after and started teaching myself to make tracks. I quickly got a record deal and released my first record about 6 months after I had started producing. In hind sight, when I listen to that first record I’m horrified! But hey, everyone has to start somewhere right?

How did your working on this remix come about? Did you have a prior connection with the artist or label?

Deep Forest was one of the first electronic acts I listened to as a kid. I used to have their cassette and play it at night when I was going to sleep. The label reached out to me and asked if I was interested in doing a remix and of course I was honoured.

What is your usual approach to starting a remix project? Do you have a process you tend to stick to?

I don’t have a process per say for remixes. I listen to the track and ask myself what can I bring to it? Usually, I then warp the stems loosely and begin chopping up parts I like and seeing what I can come up with.

Had you heard the track before? What were your initial thoughts? Did you approach this particular remix with any ideas in mind or did you improvise?

I heard the song only when they sent it to me and loved it. The synth work was incredible. I wanted to somehow make the track a bit more banging and put my style on it. I picked up the tempo, changed the drums, took my favourite melodies and replayed them, added a few break downs and took out some other parts from the original. Its a sort of process of stripping stuff back and then re-building.

What other projects are you working on at the moment that you can tell us about?

At the moment I’m currently finishing 3 new SWEATSON KLANK records. 1 full length and 2 EPs for various labels. Really excited to share this new music as it’s been a minute. I am also getting ready to launch my label which is really exciting! There is so much talent in my city as well as in my classrooms at Point Blank. I’m looking forward to helping these artists get their music heard and released. It’s a bit hush hush at the moment as we are finalising everything but stay tuned!

D.I.Y Culture: From Punk Rock to Bandcamp

Over the last few weeks, we have been delving into the new Production Analysis module on our BA (Hons) Music & Sound Engineering Degree and our brand new equivalent Online Degree course, giving you a sneak peek of what to expect on the course. So far we’ve covered the roots of dance, specifically the impact of Dub and Disco, exploring the impact they made on electronic music as we know it today. This instalment is no less pivotal, albeit in a different way. This week we look at the rise of D.I.Y culture, documenting its tremendous impact on the music industry, from Punk Rock to Dance music. We’ll be discussing some of the production options available today and the rise of independent labels and releases, including self-promoting using internet platforms.

How to Sequence a Modular Synth using Arturia Modular V

With the introduction of fixed-architecture synths, modular synthesis experienced a decline in the 1980s. Modular synthesisers had been commercially manufactured over ten years before by the legendary Bob Moog and Don Bulcha, who ceased production in 1981 & 1984. However, this made them much more sought after, so eventually, companies like Modcan and Doepfer introduced new modular systems in the 90s, beginning a massive resurgence in modular synthesis. The advent of the internet, plugins and modern DAWs only hastened this resurgence, with modular synthesis becoming much more affordable in the shape of virtual systems – one of which we discuss in the above video. Arturia’s emulation of the legendary Moog Modular – Modular V.

Point Blank Instructor Spotlight: Computo

One of the things that sets Point Blank apart is the quality of our expert instructors. Our team in Los Angeles is no exception. Each of our instructors is selected for their combination of talent, music industry experience and tangible success – which they pass on to you in the classroom. Joe Caputo aka Computo, a Hollywood-based producer and sound designer with a serious addiction to modular synthesis has been teaching the Sound Design module of our Music Production & Sound Design Advanced Diploma at PBLA for over 2 years now. Having worked for 6 years at Native Instruments, he trained artists like Zedd, Flying Lotus and A-Trak in the specifics of Maschine and Komplete. Now Computo is focused on modular synth composition and sound design, co-founding the CNTRPNT modular workshop series, as well as being involved in the Voltage Control Lab, a platform that he’s created for both new and experienced modular synth enthusiasts to learn about their instruments and take control of their sound. We caught up with him for a interview on his working with Sage Lewis on the Operator film score. Read it here.

Point Blank Ibiza School: August Term Open Due to Demand!

Ushuaia – an official supporter of Point Blank Ibiza

Yep, you read it right: Point Blank Music School has launched in Ibiza, the Balearic international hub of electronic music! We have teamed up with Can Blau Music School, a facility nestled in an idyllic village near San Jose, to bring you our Ibiza DJ/Producer Course. Due to popular demand, we are running another course from Monday August 28th, so if you want to attend don’t delay and reserve your place now!

Students on this two-week course will be provided with their own fully equipped workstation, with the latest equipment from Pioneer DJ and Ableton at their fingertips. The course is taught in English by expert instructors Gaty Lopez and expert DJ instructor from Point Blank London, Nigel Hosten – these guys have remixed for the likes of Depeche Mode and Danny Tenaglia and performed at legendary venues including Space and Pacha, so you know you’re in good hands.

We’ll also be holding guest masterclasses each week from visiting DJ’s and producers to ensure students are able to forge international connections within the music industry. This will include industry experts such as  Henry Sarmiento – owner of top Ibiza recording studio – Sonic Vista Studios, Javier Ferrer – producer at Ushuaia’s recording studio, and Graham Sahara (Pioneer DJ Radio).

If you are wondering about accommodation, we have partnered up with Hotel Puchet, where you can redeem a fantastic discount of nearly 50% off rooms, as well as being provided with breakfast and free transport to and from the school. If all of this isn’t enough to convince you, our connections within Ibiza’s nightlife means that you’ll have industry access to some of the island’s best clubs, such as Pacha and Ushuaia. Point Blank will also be hosting parties at venues such as Hotel Pacha and on the roof terrace of Ocean Drive Hotel, where students will have the opportunity to play a set!
