The Voice and The X Factor Auditions at Point Blank in London

Over the past few weeks, we’ve welcomed not one but two of the country’s most prestigious singing competitions, not to mention most popular programmes on television, to audition our students for next year’s editions of each. We have a special association with The X Factor in particular, given that Leona Lewis, winner of the third series of The X Factor, studied with us earlier in her career. We offer several variations of tuition focused on singing at PB London, tailored to match everyone’s individual needs. Find out more here.

PB Alumnus Leona Lewis’ Picture at Orsman Road Led Students to the X Factor Audition Room

The X Factor is entering it’s fifteenth year, making it by far the longest-running television series of its kind in the UK. The show has produced a string of uber-successful stars since it’s inception, including Alexandra Burke, Matt Cardle, Little Mix, JLS, One Direction and of course our own Leona Lewis. One Point Blank alumnus has already gone the distance, and why not another? Fun fact: one of the writers of The X Factor’s theme tune is a former expert instructor at Point Blank. Jos Jorgenson taught music composition and wrote Paloma Faith’s ‘Upside Down’ with his songwriting partner Andy Love.

The Voice’s history is slightly shorter than that of The X Factor in the UK, starting as it did in 2012, two years after the original show aired in the Netherlands. With a slightly different focus, successful contestants are paired up with one of the show’s four coaches, which inevitably are made up of some of the most iconic names in the industry, including the likes of will.i.am, Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora and Olly Murs. They can’t quite compare with Phil Ramocon and Linton Bennett, but it’s not bad.

These are just a couple of examples of the recent opportunities we’ve helped lay on for our students, and more are always on the way. Every Sunday we publish the best of what our network of contacts has passed our way on our Opportunities blog. Also, there are many ways to the top, and we can help you achieve your goals in each of our schools: in London, Mumbai, Ibiza, Los Angeles and Online.

Remix Competition: No.1 Hit ‘Unbelievable’, EMF. Win a Course and Komplete 11

Who remembers this one? We have an unbelievable (sorry) opportunity for Point Blank students and graduates this week. A remix of an absolute classic by EMF – ‘Unbelievable’. That’s right – we’ve teamed up with EMF’s songwriter and guitarist, Ian Dench, and got our hands on the stems of one of the early nineties biggest hits. To enter, send an email to theo@pointblankmusicschool.com and we can provide private access to the stems. Please note that you won’t be able to share them, or your finished track until approved – submissions must be made privately to Point Blank only. The winning entrant will win a free ‘Complete’ online course and a copy of Komplete 11 by Native Instruments, worth £1,700. The winning remix also has the chance to be signed and released by the artist! These are the kind of opportunities you get on a regular basis when studying at Point Blank.

‘Unbelievable’ was released in 1991, a concise distillation of the vibe and feel of the Madchester style of guitar music that had gripped the UK. At the time, there were countless bands mining the same rich vein in the post-rave landscape, but something about ‘Unbelievable’ took it to the top of the Billboard chart in the USA, breaking into the American psyche where so many had failed.

After the band split in 1997, Ian Dench went on to form the band Whistler, who released two LPs in ‘Whistler’ and ‘Faith in the Morning’. Later, he became a songwriter for hire and has penned hits for the likes of Shakira, The Prodigy and Beyoncé. Tracks by Dench have also appeared in the ITV series The Halycon.

Remixing is a key part of producing dance music, is covered extensively on our comprehensive BA (Hons) in Music Production and Engineering degree, also available online. Check out our other schools too in Ibiza, Mumbai and LA. For more info, or to book a tour of one of our schools, speak to a course advisor.

Student Opportunity: Apply now for the Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme 2018

We are very excited to announce that we are now taking applications for the 2018 Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme! Read on for all the info you need on how to apply. With the Programme now open once again for 2018, we were delighted to catch up with Gabby to talk about how the past year has been for her since winning the 2017 programme. Check out the video below for the full lowdown.

The Accelerator Programme launched early last year, starting our search for a student or alumnus with the potential to hoist to the top of the industry, using the combined resources and contacts of Point Blank and Pioneer DJ.  The 2017 winner, DJ/Producer Gabby Gunn, enjoyed access to huge industry events such as IMS Ibiza and Amsterdam Dance Event, and was providing a wide range of mix, live performance and networking opportunities across the year.

One year on, Gabby returned to our studio in London to talk us through what she’s been up to over the past year. If you read this blog you will know about a fair few of her exploits already – which included trips to IMS Ibiza and ADE – but as Gabby explains in the video above, many more opportunities presented themselves along the way. Take her set at the BBC Introducing stage at Creamfields for an example, or her recorded performance at the final edition of the much-loved UK institution Secret Garden Party. She also shares some of the networking opportunities that arose over the year, together with access to the latest Pioneer gear.

Our DJ studio at Point Blank London is fully kitted with the latest equipment from Pioneer DJ, including the DJS-1000 sampler released late last year

If you are a student or a recent graduate who has already played a variety of DJ gigs, then you could be this year’s winner. The profile of these gigs doesn’t matter, all we need to see is potential and the drive to succeed – the successful candidate will be catapulted to some of the industry’s highest-profile platforms, so this is not for the faint of heart.

Interested in applying for this exclusive opportunity to fast track your DJ career? You’ll need to send an application to matt@pointblankmusicschool.com by 11th March 2018. Your application should give a full outline of your DJ credentials to date, together with a link to one of your mixes which you feel gives the best representation of your selector and mixing skills. After an initial shortlisting process, the successful candidate will be confirmed in March, with the programme commencing through to December. Please note this opportunity is for Point Blank students and graduates only.

Don’t forget that if you’re not at the level required yet we can help you get there. Take a DJ course with us and get started, or hone your skills with that little bit of guidance. Want to go deeper still, our BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering covers all the bases for you to make it as a musician in today’s industry, so don’t hesitate. As a student you’ll also qualify for this and countless other opportunities too.
