DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank in London! Watch Week Four of His Vlog

A few weeks ago we welcomed Australian DJ and vlogger DJ Ravine to study with us in London. Due to his excellent YouTube channel and series of demos and instructional videos we were delighted to collaborate with him last year on an introduction to Ableton video. We enjoyed it so much that we invited him back to study with us this year, and he kindly agreed to keep us in the updated on his progress on his educational journey. He’s never had any formal training, so he’s studying Intro to Music Production, as well as courses in Music Composition and Sound Engineering. Check out these modules, plus our other combinations of study topics at our London school’s webpage. Four weeks in, here’s his latest video.

This week Ravine takes us along to his Sound Engineering class to get a glimpse at what he and his group have been assigned. First Anthony Chapman gives us a quick lesson on the three most common types of microphone used in music: dynamic, condenser and ribbon mics. Later, we join Ravine at one of the PB-hosted Native Meetups, where producers come and share tips and pointers with instructors and Native Instruments experts. One of those experts, Doug McAvoy shares a brief lowdown on what goes on at these meetups. Finally, we return to Ravine’s studio where we see the end result of he and his group’s remix of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’, using a drum and bass break and some big bass drops.

Check back next week for another edition of DJ Ravine’s vlog with us. Meanwhile, why not take a look at our YouTube channel for more instructional videos, as well as demonstrations and previews. Or take a look at our full list of production courses in London and Online. For more info and to talk to a course advisor, call us on +44 20 7729 4884.

DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank in London! Watch Week Three of His Vlog

A few weeks ago we welcomed top Australian DJ and vlogger DJ Ravine to study with us in London. Having collaborated with him the past on instructional videos, something he does excellently on his own YouTube channel, he has kindly agreed to keep us in the updated on his progress with his studies with us. Despite his experience as a DJ and having dabbled with production in the past, Ravine joined us having had no formal training. As such he is studying Intro to Music Production, as well as courses in Music Composition and Sound Engineering. Check out these modules, plus our other combinations of study topics at our London school’s webpage. Without further ado, let’s take a look at week 3.

This week DJ Ravine first spends some time setting up his home studio so he can work on his tracks at home outside of class. As he points out, Point Blank students can get up to 50% off software and gear including Pioneer DJ, Native Instruments and Ableton, so you can get everything you need to start making proper strides in your music making without breaking the bank. He also took some time out from his studies to attend our open-mic night hosted by Grammy award-winning PB instructor Phil Ramocon, where every fortnight anyone can show off their skills at the pub just over the road from our studios on Orsman Road.

In terms of classes, this week introduced some theory for the first time from Ravine, and we are treated to chat between himself and composition instructor Linton Bennett, who reveals his motto to be “technique is the ability to do what your imagination requires”. What he means by this, is by learning theory, in this case, chords, keys and scales, students are simply being given the tools to extract what they hold in their heads in a cohesive manner. After this little chat, Ravine shares with us the basic chord structures he learned with this week’s study.

We’re back again with another round-up of former glories, cherry-picking the brightest and best videos, interviews and offers from the past month. As always, our content is designed to help students and curious readers alike to gain insight and expertise in all facets of the music industry. To take this to the next level, head to our pages for schools in London, LA, Ibiza, Mumbai and Online.

Halloween Offer: 25% Off Online Courses

With just one day remaining we thought it vital to include a mention of our current Online offer. Get 25% Off Online courses until midnight tonight!

Octave One: Live Performance Masterclass

We have welcomed many great artists to our schools over the years, and as a result, been treated to an incredible array of guest classes and demonstrations. In Octave One, we added another to the very top of the list, with the duo having contributed immeasurably to both playing live and techno as a whole over their long history. Watch as they take us through their celebrated set-up, offer invaluable advice and demonstrate their world-beating live show.

An Interview with Prequell

Thomas Rousel may not be on everyone’s radar, but over the last fifteen years or more, he has been on a huge number of important radars nonetheless. A lifetime composer and hugely respected conductor and bandleader, he has scored films, TV and advertisements; provided music for fashion brands like Chanel, Akris and Christian Dior; and worked on several records by Justice and Jeff Mills. Since the turn of the century, he has achieved more, and in more fields, than most achieve in a lifetime, and he now turns his considerable talents to making music as a recording artist, under the name Prequell – an allusion to his original ambition to make the kind of emotive, electronic and orchestral crossover present on his debut album. We caught up with him to learn about composing for different mediums, and what’s compelled him to make this switch.

How to Create Evolving Sounds with Native Instruments Maschine

Last month also saw the release of the latest iteration of Native Instruments’ Maschine controller, elevating its capabilities further from still from its original function and maximising time spent working out of the box. PB instructor and NI specialist Paul Ressel put together a pair of videos for us to celebrate the new version’s release, and in this one, he demonstrates how to use the relationship of pitch and tempo to create dynamic rhythmic patterns, and uses morph-mode to let FX develop and intensify over the course of a track.

Behind The Scenes with Kate Simko and the London Electronic Orchestra

We’ve long been fans of Kate Simko. We first invited the Chicago native to give a masterclass with us back in 2013, when she was studying at the Royal College of Music. It was during that time hat the foundations were laid for the London Electronic Orchestra, the band that she has lead across the world in the past couple of years. We were thrilled to be able to get backstage with Kate and film her and her ensemble-mates getting ready for their latest show at The Jazz Cafe in Camden. Check the video below to see the LEO crew in action.

PB Recommends #45

We may be slightly biased, but we think we put together a fine round-up of recommended tracks here at Point Blank, and October was no different. Picks of last month’s favourites include tracks by ABRA, L-Vis 1990 and Finn’s bittersweet masterpiece ‘Sometimes The Going, Gets A Little Tough’.

If you enjoy this content, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. If you’d like to get into music production, or take yours to the next level, then consider our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree in which you can learn everything you need to know about music production including mixing, mastering, composition and music business. We also offer an online alternative, our online BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree. Watch our Native Instruments Machine Mk3 Tutorial with Paul Ressel

Just over a month ago, Native Instruments the newest version of their flagship Maschine controller, the MK3. The latest upgrade represents the biggest leap in terms of performance since the top-end Maschine Studio was launched back in 2013. It’s packed with new features and even if you’re familiar with Maschine, it’s a lot to get your head around. Have no fear though, as we’ve asked our instructor Paul Ressel, who’s not only worked with Lana Del Rey and Maxi Jazz, but also releases with his own band Vuvuvulvas on Tri Tone, to demonstrate some of its new functionality. Take a look at our tutor profile on Paul for more info.

In the video, we get a look at some of the new features on the MK3 such as the touch strip, new modes like the chord and keyboard modes, as well as the hugely improved editing capabilities, expanding what you can do without needing to revert to software. In just 13 minutes, Paul Ressel takes us through arranging and sketching and ideas, with an arrangement built from just two sounds.

When the first Maschine was released in 2009, it completely changed the landscape of using digital tools to make music. It borrowed the best features of the legendary Akai MPC and paired hardware sampler functionality with linked software to become more of a compact, digital studio. It has since undergone several makeovers: the Maschine Mikro introduced more portability, MK2 was an incremental upgrade with greater customisation, Maschine Studio added screens and a huge range of extra functionality to match its professional target audience and the Maschine Jam emulated Ableton’s Push module in design. The MK3 though marks the biggest change to the original design since it’s inception. We’re already sold.

Want to learn on Native Instruments gear? NI are an official partner of Point Blank and in London and LA our studios are kitted out with the full range of NI products: Maschine, Komplete, Komplete Kontrol and Traktor. On our Sound Engineering classes as part of our B.A Programme you will make use of our Native Instruments studio where you can find all of this kit in one place, and you’ll also learn everything you need to know about production.
