Feel The Rhythm

Each layer of Analog Strings sports two independent rhythm generators that can be either set to LFO or Step Sequencer. The rhythm generators can be used to modulate layer volume, layer pan, filter cutoff, filter resonance, tube saturation, distortion drive amount, lo-fi distortion bits, and lo-fi distortion sample rate. The top section of the page also offers controls for setting the rate (speed) of modulation and dialing in the amount of modulation being sent to either of the eight available modulation destinations. You can also quickly enable/disable all rhythmic modulation or any individual rhythm generator. This section also features Flux, a reimagined step rate sequencer that determines the modulation rate of all rhythm generators. Each step of the flux rate sequencer has a rate parameter – meaning when the flux sequencer reaches a step, all rhythms with Flux enabled will modulate at the rate set to the current Flux Rate sequencer step. Additionally, you can set each Flux sequencer step to remain on the current step for a set amount of time.

Analog Strings

Moving further down the interface is where you select between the LFO or Step Sequencer modulation types. Each modulation type offers a selection of controls and access to presets that include LFO wave shapes and Step Sequencer patterns. In addition, you can also draw your own step pattern or create a custom LFO shape.

Arpeggiatorize

Analog Strings’ dual arpeggiator is the most advanced arp Output has built to date. Select the direction of arpeggiation from a menu offering twelve arp types and then release arpeggio madness with a host of controls for adjusting the speed, duration, gate time, swing, octave, and velocity.

Analog Strings

The step table shown in the arpeggiator allows you to program in the accent level of each note in the arpeggio. Here you can adjust the number of steps, reverse or randomized steps, control the amount of repetition of each step, and set a pedal setting which determines whether the highest or lowest note will be alternated when ‘pedal’ is enabled.

Heaps of Presets

Analog Strings comes loaded with 500 explosive presets that can quickly be swapped out from any page. Plugin Spotlight: Cooper Time Cube MkII by Universal Audio

This plugin spotlight features the Cooper Time Cube MkII by Universal Audio, a unique emulation of the original garden hose-based mechanical delay device.

Cooper Time Cube

Overview

The UAD line of plug-ins is famously known for their unmatched ability to emulate legendary classics with precision at the highest quality. The Cooper Time Cube is an example of their mastery to not only capture the original sound characteristics and functionality but to also provide modern enhancements for today’s sonic demands.

Designed by Duane H. Cooper and Bill Putnam, the Cooper Time Cube was a garden hose-based mechanical delay device introduced in 1971. Over the years it has achieved cult status as the most unique delay processors ever made. Famous for its short delay and doubling effects, the original the Cooper Time Cube offers simplicity at its finest as well an impressive ability to sit perfectly in the mix.

The Cooper Time Cube MkII plug-in for UAD-2 hardware and Apollo interfaces is a precise emulation of the coveted original hardware unit. It faithfully captures the sound of the original delay system, while offering modern delay features making it a versatile, fat-sounding space maker worth checking out.

Key Features

  • Designed by Duane H. Cooper and Bill Putnam — one of the most unique delays ever made
  • All the vibe of the original, with modern feature enhancements
  • Two delay lines can be set independently and adjusted with Delay, Decay, Pan and Volume controls
  • Separately adjustable tempo sync for both A & B delay lines
  • “Coils” selection recreates the original sound of the CTC regardless of Delay setting
  • Treble and Bass tone controls, High Pass Filter, Wet Solo, and analog-style metering
  • MIMO, MISO and SISO operation (SISO is true stereo)
  • Requires a UAD-2 DSP Accelerator Card or Apollo Interface available from authorized dealers worldwide

The Original Cooper Time Cube

Cooper Time Cube

Designed by Dr. Duane H. Cooper of the University of Illinois and Bill Putnam of UREI, the original UREI/Universal Audio Model 920-16 Cooper Time Cube was a unique delay system that introduced a garden-hose-based mechanical delay to the stage in 1971. Originally created specifically for recording studio and motion picture sound applications, the original Cooper Time Cube became famous for its unmatched short delay and doubling effects, as well its astounding ability to enhance sounds in the mix. However, the hardware unit was limited and only provided 14ms, 16ms or a combined 30ms delay setting. Although it was less flexible than conventional tape-based delays of the time, the Cooper Time Cube provided a unique character that became highly sought after. In addition, only 1,000 were ever made.

Cooper Time Cube

The original Cooper Time Cube hardware was built with a rugged 2′ x 2′ plywood housing filled with coiled tubing, Shure SM57-style microphone capsules at both ends of each line used as speakers and pickups, and a series of tooled aluminum blocks with “tuning screws” at various places for tuning the delay. Also, the entire delay mechanism was suspended on springs within the housing to maintain “acoustical isolation,” and was then filled with packing peanuts. In addition, a 3 1/2″ x 19″ rack mount unit provided two audio channels, a power supply, access to four UREI 1109 line amplifiers, independent delay line input gains, a meter to view the delay output, and four TRS jacks for front-panel signal access and routing. The rear of the unit included two standard 25″ microphone extension cables with XLR-3 type connectors for interconnecting the chassis and the housing.

Cooper Time Cube

Before the era of digital delay, the hardware worked by sending live audio through long pieces of tubing to create a time delay. There were two channels, A and B. Each channel is transduced to/from a coiled length of plastic tubing which provides the acoustic “sound columns” that define its distinctive sonic character. The coils for each channel are placed at fixed but different lengths, which defines the available single delay times of 16ms for channel A and 14ms for channel B. The two channels could also be cascaded in series via external routing to create a total delay time of 30ms.

Since its inception, this incredible delay unit has grown a strong following and has found a home in some of the most prestigious studios around the globe and has been used on countless hit records over the years. Top producers and engineers such as Richard Dodd, Vance Powell, and Joe Chicarelli still swear by the Cooper Time Cube for its unique character and its exceptional ability to always sit perfectly in the mix.

Working with Cooper Time Cube

Cooper Time Cube

The Cooper Time Cube MkII plug-in has all the vibe of the original plus modern feature enhancements easily accessible through a user-friendly interface. It is a true stereo plug-in that sports two independent delay processors. Each channel has its own set of controls in addition to global controls. The front panel provides all the controls; there are no hidden panels and options. The plug-in version goes much further by offering all the necessary features expected from a modern delay device such as independent channel controls for Delay times, Decay, Pan, Volume, and Tempo Sync. MkII also incorporates other enhanced tone-shifting features such as a 2-pole high pass filter and a Color switch that toggles between the original filter emphasis of the hardware in position A and the “leveled” filter frequency response in position B, which allows for greater Decay ranges. Lastly, there is also a switch for soloing the Wet signal and a Send switch that allows momentary interruption of the signal being sent into the delay system. In addition, UAD offers 32 presets to get you going with ease. They provide a good starting place to hear all the different delay possibilities.

Take Away

The Cooper Time Cube MkII is a brilliant sounding spatial processor that delivers the sound of the original delay system while offering all the necessary features expected from a modern delay device. The distinct sound of the single or double hose Coil is preserved regardless of delay setting, and either sound is available at the flick of a switch. This delay is great for adding subtle richness and loudness enhancement to any sound using the shorter delay times or for introducing small room ambiances and more traditional echoes with longer delay times.

Also, it’s inspiring to have the opportunity to work with a legendary processor that has been a major recording studio staple for over three decades. Not many delay plug-ins can deliver this magnitude of performance at a fraction of the price that aging hardware version is going for. The Universal Audio Cooper Time Cube MkII is remarkability one of the finest “character” delay plugins available today at an affordable price. Another great achievement for Universal Audio!

Plugin Spotlight: AMS RMX16 by Universal Audio

This plugin spotlight features the AMS RMX16 Digital Reverb by AMS Neve and Universal Audio, a faithful emulation that harnesses the exact legendary sound of the famous hardware.

RMX16

Overview

The legendary AMS RMX16 was the world’s first microprocessor-controlled, full-bandwidth, digital reverberator hardware. The renowned sounds of the RMX16 are instantly recognizable and are heard on a massive scale of seminal recordings from the 1980s onward. It’s sought after characteristics are still used today, and the RMX16 can found in nearly every major recording studio around the globe.

Thanks to the innovators at Universal Audio and AMS Neve, the unique and lush reverb programs of the original unit are expertly captured in the only authentic emulation of the AMS RMX16 Digital Reverb plugin which is designed exclusively for UAD-2 hardware and Apollo interfaces. With the merging of analog heritage and groundbreaking digital designs you can now enhance your mixes with all nine classic sounds of the original RMX16 which are Ambience, Room, two Hall types, Plate, Echo, Chorus, NonLin, and Reverse. Better yet, you also get an addition of modern features such as dry/wet mix, wet solo, and easy “click-and-type” editing of control values not available on the hardware model.

The Only Authentic AMS RMX16 Emulation

In developing this UAD plugin version of the landmark processor, AMS founder and the original hardware designer Mark Crabtree revisited his initial schematics and extensive notes to design an emulation that harnesses the exact iconic reverb and delay algorithms of the famous hardware AMS RMX16. After a laborious two-year process, the end result delivered an impressive reproduction so faithful that even the manual is a verbatim transcript of the original published version. Even more remarkable is that Mark Crabtree tuned the RMX16 by ear instead of following specs to design an effect processor that is more musical than mathematic.

“Only a full and faithful implementation of the RMX16 would satisfy me. I have spent nearly as long designing the plugin as I did on designing the original unit from scratch!” – Mark Crabtree

Key Features

  • Modeled exactly after the original AMS RMX16 design and schematics under supervision of its original designer, Mark Crabtree
  • Fully endorsed by AMS Neve as the world’s only authentic emulation
  • Record and mix with the authentic AMS Neve RMX16 in use by top studios worldwide
  • Apply classic RMX16 Programs such as Ambience, Room, Hall, or Plate reverbs, as well as Echo, Chorus, Nonlinear, and Reverse effects
  • Exclusive plug-in-only features include Dry/Wet Mix, Wet Solo, and easy click-and-type editing of controls
  • Requires UAD-2 DSP Accelerator Card or Apollo Interface, available from authorized dealers worldwide

AMS RMX16 in Action

RMX16

Working with the RMX16 is pretty straight forward. The front panel provides all the controls; there are no hidden panels and options. Identical to the original, a large classic looking digital display shows you all the details. Input and output levels are set using the rotary controls on the far left side, accompanied with a small LED overflow meter that makes it easy to level match and control the signal to avoid clipping. Dialing in the desired reverb effect is accomplished by clicking the ‘program’ key and then ‘nudge up’ or ‘nudge down’ to select the effect you require. Next, fine-tune the reverberation by selecting any of the function keys below the display and then adjusting its numerical value to control various sound shaping settings in one of four ways: Specific parameter values can be set using the keypad, clicking the ‘nudge’ keys, or using the rotary pot. The new fourth option exclusive to the UAD plugin is the ability to click in the display window and type in a value. In addition, the RMX16 comes with some excellent presets courtesy of a few successful audio engineers.

AMS RMX16 Sound Examples

AMS RMX16 History

Founded in 1976 by former aerospace technicians Mark Crabtree and Stuart Nevison, Advanced Music Systems (AMS) now AMS Neve is one of the early pioneers in manufacturing digital audio effect processors. Both sharing a passion for audio and having a wide expertise in digital electronics, the two set out to design some of the most recognized professional audio equipment in the industry.

In 1981, at a time when digital audio processing technology was new, cutting–edge, and exciting, AMS released one of their most successful and enduring products – the microprocessor-controlled AMS RMX16 Digital Reverb. During this era, large plate reverbs were still one of the primary sources for artificial reverberation in major recording studios. In addition, they expensive and also took up a lot of space. The much smaller AMS RMX16 brought a significant advancement in technology, affordability, and required far less physical space or isolation needed by a plate.

RMX16 While digital delay units were extremely popular at the time, digital reverb technology was still new and very expensive. The RMX16 introduced a fascinating new characteristic sound and friendly usability that quickly gained acceptance with musicians and engineers making it one of the most famous effects processors of all time. What also makes this reverb unit stand out from its competitors other than its compact size and signature sound is that it was designed to be musical rather than simply implementing mathematical algorithms. Each of the nine programs was tuned and retuned by ear over an extended period of time to provide a variety of “sweet-spot” settings that resulted in a classic sound that’s hard to match.

Take Away

The AMS RMX16 is a brilliant sounding reverb and my new favorite! I was blown away how awesome this sounded just loading the default. I immediately fell more in love with its sound after playing around with different reverb types, predelay, and decay values. However, no great sounding plugin is capable of capturing complex sonic characteristics without a price of straining the CPU. The RMX16 is no exception; the UAD plugin sounds absolutely amazing but uses up a significant share of DSP to give us the ear candy we love. Check your resources before loading up an instance or two.

Also, it’s inspiring to have the opportunity to work with a legendary processor that has been a major recording studio staple for over three decades. Not many reverb plugins can deliver this magnitude of performance at a fraction of the price that aging hardware versions are going for, which are still in high demand. The Universal Audio AMS RMX16 is remarkability one of the finest “character” reverb plugins available today at an affordable price. Another great achievement for both Universal Audio and AMS Neve!

Music Foundations Program

Unravel electronic music’s origins, build your chops, learn musical language and theory, and make and play music the way you want. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the roots and lineage of a variety of electronic and dance music genres, strengthen their keyboard skills, and learn valuable music theory, deepening their creative practice and facilitating effective collaborations with musical partners.

About This Program

The best producers, DJs, and musicians in the world strive to be well-rounded. So should you. In Dubspot’s Music Foundations Program, you’ll explore three major aspects of music: rhythmic theory, melodic theory, and critical listening.

Most pioneering early electronic musicians had years of conservatory training in theory and performance but had access to very limited technologies. In today’s musical world, it’s the opposite: we have a powerful and versatile array of electronic music making tools at our fingertips, but often fall short in our theoretical understanding of how electronic music works.

Our Music Foundations program is designed to fill this gap and provide training in fundamental skills and concepts with the electronic musician, DJ, and producer in mind. In this course, you’ll build your chops and learn the basics of musical language and theory so that you can make and play the music you want. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the roots and lineage of a variety of electronic and dance music genres, and explore compositional techniques and song structure. The weekly homework lessons for all three courses have been designed using Ableton Live, and along the way you’ll also learn the basics of Ableton and how to use it as a powerful tool to improve your musicianship in a variety of ways.

What’s Included

  • Music Foundations Level 1: Pads & Rhythmic Theory
  • Music Foundations Level 2: Keys & Melodic Theory
  • Music Foundations Level 3: Critical Listening

Dubspot Top Picks: 20 Choice Compressor Plugins

This Dubspot Top Picks guide features a selection of our favorite compressor plugins based on professional quality sound, characteristics, and affordability.

Compressor Plugins

Compressors and limiters are specialized amplifiers used to reduce the dynamic range of a signal, which is the span between the loudest and softest sounds. The use of compressors can make recordings and live mixes sound more polished by controlling maximum levels and maintaining higher average loudness. In addition, many compressors have a characteristic signature sound that can be used to inject coloration and tone into otherwise lifeless tracks or mixes. Compression can also be used to subtly treat a track to make it more natural sounding and intelligible without adding distortion, resulting in a song that’s more “comfortable” to listen to. Alternately, over-compressing your music can ultimately squeeze the life out of your mixes causing them to lose punch and clarity. For those who are unfamiliar with compressors, having a good grasp of the basics will go a long way toward understanding how compression works, and how to apply this essential treatment to your advantage.

Plugin Spotlight: Magic AB v2 by Sample Magic

Get an in-depth look at Magic AB v2 by Sample Magic, a simple yet powerful reference track tool for production, mixing, and mastering.

Magic AB

Magic AB Overview

Sample Magic has earned a strong reputation as being one of the world’s leading provider of professional sound samples, instrument presets, musical components, music production resources, and software to producers across a wide range of genres. Fueling their line of innovative products is the all-new version of Magic AB, an award-winning referencing plugin.

Simplicity is the core concept behind Magic AB. This extremely proficient and powerful plugin allows you to compare the track you are working on with up to nine pre-loaded reference tracks flawlessly. Magic AB is both an indispensable mixing tool and a serious workflow enhancer that excels at regularly checking how your mixes or masters stack up against other commercially produced tracks or tracks that clients have provided as benchmarks.

What makes this tool so amazing is its ability to reference tracks effortlessly without having to setup complex bus routings, inconveniently mute channels, or toggle between outputs. Even more, everything you need is available in one stripped-back interface that does one thing in as an efficient way as possible without draining your CPU resources. It can even be switched to a compact version that uses a minimum amount of screen space, perfect for when you need space for other plugins.

Magic AB

ABing full mixes is just one of the great feature sets of Magic AB. It can also be used on individual channels when working on a new track to help you emulate any sound you admire. For example, you can AB between the source material and the part you’re working on, and then regularly switch between the two as you hone in on the tone you desire.

Magic AB is also a go-to tool for mastering engineers as well, allowing them to compare in an instant the track they are working on not just to other commercial masters, but also to the other tracks on the album.

Magic AB Workflow

Magic AB is arguably the fastest and easiest way to perform instant AB references to compare the track you are working on in your DAW with any commercially produced reference track. It is designed to work best when placed at the end of the processing chain so you can mix a track using your favorite plugins and compare them against reference tracks without affecting the sound of the reference tracks with your processing chain.

Loading reference tracks can’t be any more simplistic. Quickly load a track by simply dragging and dropping an audio file onto a track slot or alternatively, clicking on the text box alongside one of the nine players to open a window that shows two options for loading and unloading audio. Once audio is loaded, you can effortlessly toggle between tracks by clicking the ‘Play’ button next to each of the nine players. Each player also features a ‘Focus’ button that enables you to select a track to view in the display without starting its playback as well as a ‘Gain’ slider to dial in the tracks volume and a ‘RAM’ button for deactivating tracks to ease your CPU load.

Magic AB

Magic AB goes beyond simple playback of reference tracks. This full featured plugin also sports three different playback modes and a host of options that let you hone in on the details such as zoom, play/cue, loop controls, and more. You can now define up to four cue points for each reference track with version 2, and then easily drag the Cue markers to a desired playback location. In addition, you can name Cue points from a list of structural titles such as Intro, Chorus, Drop, etc. for better navigation between Cue points.

Magic AB

No mixing tool is complete without output meters. Balance the relative volume of mixes with the high-res Peak and RMS displays that sports improved Mono/Stereo monitoring, volume faders, and large AB buttons for toggling between your DAW’s output and Magic AB’s reference stream.

Magic AB

Magic AB has workflow in mind at every move. Quickly compare multiple mixes by simply creating and saving your own ‘go-to’ playlists to radically speed up loading tracks or save presets that can be loaded anytime during a session. Magic AB also has the user’s needs in mind as well and features a ‘Bypass’ button to disable the plugin, and preference options that give you the ability to manually adjust crossfade times to give your ears a chance to recalibrate. Allowing your ears to recalibrate is especially useful when your monitoring environment or speakers are less than perfect.

Magic AB

Final Thoughts

Magic AB isn’t designed to enhance your sounds or directly alter your tracks. It is designed as a reference tool used to make the moves necessary to improve your mixes and streamline your workflow. After using Magic AB, I can’t imagine working without it to help me push my sounds into commercial quality territory. In addition, the Dubspot team loves this plugin so much that we use it in our Mixing and Mastering Program.

Key Features

Magic AB is both an powerful mixing tool and a workflow improver that allows the producer to:

  • Perform instant AB references: compare the track you are working on in your DAW with any commercially produced reference track in a variety of audio formats (mp3, Aiff, Wav, m4a, AAC).
  • Like the sound of a reference? No problems – drag/drop your chosen reference track/s into Magic AB then flick between them and your mix with a single mouse click.
  • New in Version 2: three unique referencing modes: Sync to compare your current mix with older versions – a mastering must; Latch to follow the DAW timeline; and Manual for freeform referencing.
  • Hone in on the details: cue the reference track from the precise point you want to hear and loop the section you want to focus on. New with V2: save up to four cue/loop points per track and work in detail with the all-new zoom.
  • Compare multiple mixes quickly and simply: create and save ‘go-to’ playlists to radically speed up mixing and mastering.
  • Balance the relative volume of mixes with extensive, accurate, easy-to-read metering (peak, RMS and crest values with adjustable peak fall time). The clear, ergonomically designed GUI with bold waveform display means you’re always comparing like with like.
  • Compare stereo mixes or flip to mono to check mono compatibility.
  • Give your ears a chance to recalibrate with manually changeable crossfade times. Flip in an instant, or allow transitions of up to 2000ms.
  • Do it all ‘in mini’ with Mini AB – the same powerful feature set at a tenth of the size: ideal for those using smaller screens.

Availability

Magic AB available to download at Authorized Dealers and Sample Magic.

Compatibility: PC and Mac in VST/AU/AAX formats compatible with 32/64bit DAWs.

Software Spotlight: SUBSTANCE Bass Engine by Output

Get an in-depth look at SUBSTANCE by Output, an innovative bass engine built for the modern producer, composer, musician, and sound designer looking to add some deep heavyweight vibes.

Substance

With every groundbreaking concept, Output continues to impress. The creative force behind the development of innovative software instruments such as REV, SIGNAL, and EXHALE have shaken the music community literally with SUBSTANCE, a radically new breed of bass engine that runs in KONTAKT or Free KONTAKT Player version 5.5.1 and higher.

“Our goal with SUBSTANCE was to create a bass engine that was not focused on emulation, but rather, on pushing the envelope with creative and powerful new sounds,” says Output Founder Gregg Lehrman. “It’s our most sophisticated engine to date, and you can really get a sense of that from the first note.” – Output Team

SUBSTANCE Overview

SUBSTANCE brings some serious rumble cleverly wrapped up in Outputs signature modern designed interface. This powerful bass engine combines heavily processed electric and acoustic basses, real live brass sections, huge polysynths, and the dirtiest analog synths with some insane sound design possibilities. Pushing the boundaries of bass creation, SUBSTANCE delivers stacked deepness through three layers of sound sources that are blended together with a selection of FX, filters, and modulation options which can be further shaped to wild extremes with an advanced arpeggiator, flux control, macros, and more.

Main Page Madness

SUBSTANCE’s Main Page is where you can quickly mix, mute, or even cycle through and swap out various sound sources for each of the three layers. This page also sports Output’s signature curved Macro sliders that allow users to effortlessly assign and control up to six parameters at once with a single slider. This means you can simultaneously adjust 24 parameters with ease for some major low-end manipulation.

SUBSTANCE

Edit with Ease

Sculpt your sounds with precision on SUBSTANCE’s Edit Page. All three layers sport the essential controls for editing the ADSR envelope, pan field, tuning, and sample start settings. You can also enable/disable monophonic mode and legato mode as well as mute, adjust the volume, and change the sound source for each layer.

SUBSTANCE

Below the layer-level section is an ’advanced’ menu where you can set the keyrange, glide time, and velocity sensitivity for each layer to give your sounds some stylistic expression.

SUBSTANCE

EQ to Perfection

Get your heavyweights in shape with SUBSTANCE’s EQ Page. Each layer features a three band EQ with cool curved filter controls. Click on either low, mid, or high to access controls for each of the corresponding frequency bands. Below the layer-level is a global EQ with similar frequency, gain, and bell/shelf controls to get your sounds sitting in the mix just right.

SUBSTANCE

Filter Fun

Similar to the EQ Page, the Filter Page allows you to view and edit all the essential filter settings for each layer at once. SUBSTANCE comes equipped with ten filter modes with cutoff/resonance settings and filter ADSR envelopes plus an AMT control used to adjust the percentage that the envelope affects the filter cutoff. For example, adjusting the control to the right will increase the filter cutoff during the envelope period, and adjusting left will decrease the filter cutoff during the envelope period. Below the layer-level is a global section with a lowpass and highpass filter perfect for some massive bass swells.

Substance

FX It Up

Polish your sounds or add some extra flavor on SUBSTANCE’s FX Page. All three layers offer controls to select and edit six sound bending fx modules that include a selection of distortion emulations, motion modulation, pitch, compression, delay, and a lush reverb. Below the layer-level is a global section with four additional fx for maximum enhancement.

SUBSTANCE

Feel the Rhythm

The Rhythm Page is where you give your low-end boomers some style. Here you can go wild with modulation. The Modulation Mixer gives you full control over various modulation destinations for each layer. Set the amount of modulation for volume, distortion bite, filter cutoff, and filter resonance by dragging the colored blocks up or down for each layer send. Below the layer-level is a global section with similar send parameters for dialing in the modulation amount for basic highpass and lowpass filter settings, drive, and tone.

SUBSTANCE

The Modulation Editor below the global sends is where you can choose a modulation source from either an LFO or step sequencer, which is patched into all of the modulation destinations listed in the above Modulation Mixer section. Here you can set the rate, swing, and either draw custom modulation shapes or select a shape from a generous selection of presets. You can also invert, randomize, and offset the LFO by degrees. Keep the modulation moving each time you trigger a note or have it restart with every note by enabling the ‘retrigger’ button. Step up your rhythm game further with Flux, a secondary step sequencer dedicated to fluctuations in the global modulation rate. Depending on the step value at any given moment, Flux will either increase or decrease the global modulation rate of SUBSTANCE’s modulation. You can even draw a sequencer shape or generate random sequences by clicking the ‘randomize’ button.

SUBSTANCE

The Arpeggiator

SUBSTANCE’s arpeggiator offers 12 playback styles for generating some serious step sequences. Below the playback style selection area is a step table where you can dial in different step velocities or choose a preset with the ‘pattern’ button, and even randomize different patterns. Velocity patterns can be lengths of 1-64 steps. For some extra fun, click the ‘reverse’ button to effectively reverse the velocity pattern. Also featured are parameters for setting octaves, adjusting the gate value, and adding some swing.

SUBSTANCE

Heaps of Presets

There is no shortage of presets in SUBSTANCE. Access over 300 presets from either the Main or Preset pages. A selection of 30 tags are available to help filter your search by characteristic to quickly find your bass craving. Users can even star their favorite presets, then sort the preset list by favorites.

SUBSTANCE

SUBSTANCE Key Features

  • A playable instrument with 300 presets
  • Powerful new 3-layer engine
  • Preset menu with smart tagging
  • Layer FX and global FX
  • 4 central macro sliders unique to each preset
  • Advanced arpeggiator

The Results

SUBSTANCE is the bass drop answer for bringing some seriously styled-out low-end rhythms. It sparks instant creative inspiration and is a must have if you’re looking for an innovative bass instrument.
