Watch Octave One Give A Masterclass In Live Performance

Here at Point Blank, we’re always looking for ways we can link up with special artists and industry professionals to show you how the very best operate. We’ve recently sat down with the likes of Fred P and MJ Cole who gave the kind of insight that only their vast experience can glean. In keeping with that theme, our latest masterclass is with Octave One, who demonstrate the kind of slick intuition with a live set up that a quarter of a century in the game will bring. Take a look a below at their incredible live performance at our London studios and listen out as they talk us through their set-up, “The Mothership”.

Lenny and Lawrence Burden recently dropped into our London Studio and treated us to a live performance of their gorgeously soulful techno. The video gives the perfect vantage point to watch what the brothers get up to behind the controls of their incredible array of hardware. They also give us the inside scoop on what their live set is about, telling us why they eschew computers, what the art of performing is to them and how to make the most out of the interaction between person and machine. The pair get technical about their gear and we learn why they call their Akai MPC 1000 “The Brain”, as well as how their set up is designed to allow as much lossless experimentation on the fly as possible. Finally, the veteran duo share their thoughts on the possibilities available today vs when they started out, and why the most important thing to learn is how to fail.

Octave One have been a part of the techno landscape since 1990 when they first started releasing on Derrick May’s legendary Transmat label in Detroit, and soon after their own 430 West imprint. Initially, they were focused almost completely on recording, with Lawrence taking care of the DJing and travelling, but when a tour demanded they play live, Lenny devised the show in just two weeks. When on-stage he found he was struggling to get around all of their gear, Lawrence stepped in to help with the mixing and effects so Lenny could focus on sound-creation: an arrangement that still exists to this day. In the years since, Octave One have become synonymous with live, analogue techno. Their set has evolved with technology but they still play with hardware only and every set is defined by feel and the injection of the human element to sequenced music – an approach that has seen them play every big stage in techno, and forge longstanding links with institutions like Tresor and Berghain. In 2008, after the release of ‘Summers On Jupiter’, they stopped releasing, saying they had nothing left to say through music. A smattering of old tracks and one-offs would follow, before their touring schedule inspired their real return with ‘Burn It Down’ in 2015. Between the record’s riotous reception and their seminal Boiler Room performance from Moscow, the band’s legendary live set has never been so in-demand.

Want to up learn how to built sets like these? On our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree you can learn everything you need to know about music production including mixing & mastering, composition and music business, and in our Electronic Music Performance you’ll be taught how to tailor your set-up and play live like the best of them. We also offer an online alternative, in the form of our new online BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree. For more information, contact our course advisors on +44 20 7729 4884. Rag’n’Bone Man – Human: MJ Cole Remix Masterclass & Studio Tour

We’re presenting a very special masterclass this week as we headed down the road from our London school and joined 2-step legend MJ Cole at his studio in Farringdon for a remix masterclass of Rag’n’Bone Man’s ‘Human’, together with a studio tour and interview. This is a truly insightful masterclass into the workings of a UK Garage legend, watch the below video for the full session.

Quick Links:

Interview

In this exclusive session, MJ Cole gave us a tour of his incredibly well-equipped studio, showing us some of his favourite bits of kit, such as his Rhodes Eighty-Eight – originally owned by Portishead and used on their first album. For the masterclass element – a remix of Rag’n’Bone Man’s hit ‘Human’ – he shows us his creative workflow, touching on everything from chopping the track up for samples, vibing and coming up with ideas to mixing and arrangement. He explains and shows us how he works out a melody on his piano, finding the tonal key he wants to use and his process moving on from there in great detail, all throughout highlighting some of his favourite plugins and how he likes to apply them.

MJ Cole started his career at Drum & Bass label SOUR as a tape operator and sound engineer. After working on 2-Step remixes at SOUR, Cole wrote garage classic ‘Sincere’ in 1998 – one of the first garage tracks to break into the UK Top 40. From then on his rise was astronomical. His first album, also called ‘Sincere’, achieved critical acclaim with two tracks reaching the Top 15 on the UK singles Chart as well as earning him Mercury & Brit Award nominations. Cole even beat Dr Dre to win MOBO’s ‘Best Producer’ award in 2001. Since then he has worked with and remixed for the likes of Amy Winehouse, De La Soul, Dizzee Rascal, Alicia Keys and many more, as well as DJing all over the world at the world’s biggest festivals and venues.

If you’re interested in learning more production and mixing techniques, we cover all of this and more on our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree. To book a tour of our new studio complex in London or LA, visit the contact page on our website to get in touch with us. Dub Masterclass w/ Prince Fatty (J Dilla, Mad Professor): Creativity, Mixing & FX

Last October, we hosted Dub specialist Mike Pelanconi, aka Prince Fatty, for a masterclass at our Orsman Road studio complex. As well as making use of our 48 Channel SSL Duality Delta mixing console, Mike brought some of his own equipment with him, demonstrating some of the sonic differences between digital delays, tape echoes, spring reverbs and filters.

Starting his career at 16 working with jingles for a small radio studio in Brighton, Pelanconi quickly learnt that the reel to reel tape machines he was using could be used for much more than just recording, and he began to experiment with 2-inch tape – manipulating it to achieve the effects he wanted. He took this a step further later down the line, recalling being shouted at for using expensive condenser mics on hi-hats or 414s around the toms when setting up sound for drums. This element of thinking outside of the box is something Mike champions, and he stresses the importance of finding and developing your own signature sound. Since his days at the Brighton studio, Prince Fatty has worked with the likes of Gregory Isaacs, The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest to name a few, as well as touring around the world.

In the masterclass hosted for our students at Point Blank in London, Pelanconi shares some invaluable tips and techniques to apply to your productions, including experimenting with delay, reverb, phase and tape machines as well as working and being creative with analogue equipment. He discusses the importance of creating space and ambience in the mix and gives some sound advice on setting up your own studio space to help achieve this. Watch the video above for the full masterclass and don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more tutorials, workshops and interviews.
