ADE 2017 : Top 5 Talks And Parties

Every year industry professionals, artists both aspiring and established, as well as hoards of electronic music lovers descend on Amsterdam for the biggest festival of its kind in the world: Amsterdam Dance Event. The programme is split loosely into a conference and a festival, one side dominated by lectures, panel discussions and networking events, the other by parties showcasing the best DJs, promoters and live performers on the global dance music scene. The scale is frankly staggering, and if you’re in Amsterdam right now or planning on heading over, it’s likely that you’re a little overwhelmed. Never fear, we’ve trawled through the extensive programme to come up with a list of the top five events in both of ADE’s two strands

Fancy yourself to play at ADE one day? Well, Point Blank can help you get there. Don’t just take our word for it either: former student Gabby Gunn plays at Pioneer DJ Presents: Gabby Gunn Live for DJsounds on the TORAIZ SP-16 on Thursday 19 October. Gabby studied Music Production & Sound Engineering Diploma , or you might want to take Complete DJ Course. Why not take a look?

Read on for our top five talks and parties at ADE 2017.

ADE Conference

The Origin of Gatherings: Why We Do What We Do – ADE Pro / ADE Green

A discussion on the history of parties and gathering, featuring representatives from Arcadia, Garbicz and more. The panel will explore the changing reasons people engage in parties on all levels, and which way to take their respective interests amid the ever-increasing popularity of the scene.

Native Sessions: 25 Years of Masters at Work – ADE Sound Lab

Masters of Work are Kenny Dope and Lil Louie Vega, who over 25 years of collaboration have carved out their unique blend of house, latin music and hip-hop, and inspired generations of musicians and dancers with their unmistakable soul. In this talk with Tony Nwachukwu, hear two undisputed bedrocks of house music discuss their long history.

Defiant On The Dance Floor: How Nightlife Empowered the LGBTQ+ Community (and Vice-Versa) – ADE Pro / ADE Green

It’s all-too-often forgotten that house music, and, by extension, our entire culture is borne of the LGBTQ+ community. Dance music as we know it rooted in that scene, and it should be shouted about far more. Bogomir Doringer, Honey Dijon, Loren Granich and Peter van Vught talk through the advances wrought through music, and more importantly, everything music and culture has gained from LGBTQ+ struggle and resistance since the Stonewall riots of 1969.

Roland Masterclasses with A Guy Called Gerald – ADE Soundlab

Roland present three new products over three days with some of the worlds leading artists on demo duty. Our pick of the bunch is A Guy Called Gerald, who everyone knows for his Haçienda classic ‘Voodoo Ray’. Less well known is that he also made one of the best Jungle albums of all time in ‘Black Secret Technology’, so you know the man’s a wizard with the machines.

Lecture: Breaking Down The Wall: Entering the Chinese underground scenes by Merlijn Poolman – ADE Pro

Merlijn Poolman gives a lecture on the truly underground scenes bubbling away in China, and how and what to get into. It’s part of a stellar programme focused on China on the Sunday, which we think sums up the inquisitive and insightful nature of ADE as a whole.

ADE Festival

RADION Saturday | Resident Advisor Night

Along with De School, RADION is probably Amsterdam’s best big club, and on Saturday night it plays host to what is likely the festival’s best party. The list of DJs is undeniably amazing. Ben UFO, DJ Nobu, Umfang, Mister Saturday Night, Jayda G… Need we say more?

ZeeZout x Dimensions ADE 2017 // Thursday

Hunee B2B Call Super brings together two of the best selectors for a quite unexpected meeting of styles. Throw in Mike Servito and Courtesy and you’ve got a broad church of the cutting edge.

NGHTDVSN & LittleBig Present: Teleport ADE

With Clark and Nathan Fake playing live, you can expect the unexpected for this one. With Jon Hopkins donning the decks too, among a host of other great acts, this is a line-up dripping with class.

Everlasting BAR Love

Just three DJs over seven hours allows them time to craft the kind of journey that sticks in the memory for years. In Trevor Jackson and Red Light Radio’s Orpheu The Wizard they’ve nabbed two of the world’s finest selectors. Jackson plays a special ‘Metal Dance’ set after his compilations of the same name, so prepare for some mad music from the fringes of EBM, Krautrock, Dub and Post-Punk.

Shelter; Clone Records ADE

Blawan. Head Front Panel. Nosebleed Techno. One thing’s for sure – this will be big.

DJ at Work Bar for Point Blank x RESET

At Point Blank, we know how important it is to gain hands-on experience in order to build a successful career in the industry and if you choose to study with us we’ll ensure the best opportunities will come your way, whether your focus is on DJing, music production or live performance.

Once again we’re collaborating with London house and techno night RESET to bring our students and graduates an exclusive DJ opportunity, playing at DJ Mag’s Work Bar. If selected, you’ll join Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator representative Gabby Gunn on a special Point Blank line-up for the event. To apply, submit your best house mix to Louis with the subject heading ‘RESET DJ’. It can be tech house, funky house, deep house or some other variant – as long as you win us over with your mixing skills and selections, you’re in.

The event will be live streamed across Point Blank’s channels – the kind of high-profile exposure that will put you in front of tastemakers, promoters and label heads, while giving you some real world experience in a live club setting. If you want to be considered, make sure you submit your mix to Louis before April 9th, when the line-up will be finalised.

Do you want to enter this competition and others like it, but your skills not quite up to par just yet? You need to sign yourself up to one of our DJ courses. Gabby Gunn Announced as PB x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme’s First Representative

Back in January we announced the application details for our new Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator programme, which commences next month. This initiative aims to reward one exceptional DJ talent from Point Blank and maximise their potential, giving access to a range of exclusive music industry opportunities taking place over the course of 2017. Over the past two months, we have listened to some brilliant mixes from a wide range of PB talent and after a lengthy judging process we’re very excited to announce that Gabby Gunn will be the first representative on the programme!

We’ve chosen Gabby as Point Blank and Pioneer DJ’s first Accelerator representative on the strength of her eclectic selection skills and ability to incorporate live performance elements as part of her mixes. Gabby will be starting the Accelerator programme from April as part of a year-long schedule of guest mixes, DJ slots and conference access at world-renowned music industry events and platforms, including IMS Ibiza, DJ Sounds and ADE. You can check out Gabby’s mix submission below, which formed part of her application.

Gabby has just finished her studies at Point Blank, having enrolled on our Music Production & Sound Engineering Diploma in January 2016. She began her journey in music from the age of 5, learning to play the piano and going on to teach herself the drums and the guitar at age 14. Whilst at University, she invested in her first set of decks and within a month was performing her first set at a local hip-hop night.

Since then, Gabby has toured Australasia with residencies at venues in Queenstown, Golden Bay and at the Luminate and Kuranda Roots festivals. Upon her arrival back in the UK, Gabby decided to enrol with Point Blank to further her learning of music production alongside DJ’ing, having started her journey at London’s Rinse FM. UK bookings for YNOT, BSTK and Truck Festival followed, as well as more recently having her mixes broadcast on Secret Garden Party FM and on the BBC’s Introducing show.

Stay tuned for further updates as Gabby embarks upon the Accelerator programme, kicking off with a live streamed set at DJ Mag’s Work Bar next month, followed by a slot for Pioneer DJ Radio at IMS Ibiza in May.
