Point Blank at IMS Ibiza: Andrea Oliva DJ Masterclass

You may have noticed how much fun we had at the International Music Summit in Ibiza last month, what with our Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme winner Ambian playing at the Hard Rock in support of Flashmob and Seth Troxler, and DJ Ravine reporting from some of the parties at the event. Well, even that wasn’t the entirety of what we were up to out on the island – we also hosted a DJ masterclass with Swiss superstar Andrea Oliva. Check out the video below and take a look at some of our DJ courses to see how you too could learn some wizardry on the decks.

Andrea Oliva is known worldwide today, with past gigs on the biggest stages as diverse as Coachella and Panorama Bar and a whole host of Elrow parties. Everyone starts somewhere, however, and we learn here that he started out with a pair of belt-driven decks and Numark’s extremely basic two-channel mixer (which, let’s face it, is the beginner’s mixer of champions). We also learn some of his first inspirations to take his mixing as far technically as he could, including Erick Morillo and Little Louis Vega, leading him to his affection for four-deck mixing as demonstrated here.

After the show incorporating the four decks, Oliva gets into some of the technical nitty-gritty of his set, beginning with his RMX-1000 from Pioneer DJ. The effects unit can add impact when needed, and spices up looped sections simply. Simplicity isn’t necessarily something Oliva goes for, however, as he favours a “chaotic” approach to playlisting and planning to help allow a more natural creative process. We learn as well the importance of the warm-up set and how experience and risk-taking are the cornerstones of a constantly improving DJ.

IMS Ibiza is a massive event in the dance music calendar, drawing people from all over the globe to the white isle. Delegates in attendance are entitled to a 10% discount on course at Point Blank Ibiza, which is now enrolling for classes this summer. The courses on offer teach the basics of both DJing and Production, suited to your level, and there is another option to focus on DJing and Radio Production. Back in London, our flagship DJ course is the BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice, quality-assured by Middlesex University. For more info don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Watch Every Set from PB x DJ Mag at Work Bar: Saytek, Hollie, Ambian + Paradoks

Last night Point Blank descended on DJ Mag at Work for a showcase of the freshest talent from the school, as well as a blistering live set from Saytek: jet-setting performer and Point Blank expert instructor. As well as turning it out for those in attendance, the whole thing was live-streamed via DJ Mag and our own channels, so you could get down from home. Want access to gigging opportunities like this and hone your skills at the same time? Check out our latest degree programme, the BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice, quality assured by Middlesex University.

Saytek LIVE

Point Blank instructor and expert techno knob-twiddler Saytek headlined for us on the night, bringing his intergalactic live-setup for a marauding set of on-the-fly bangers in house, techno and acid.

Hollie

Closing out the night was Hollie, driving through a barrage of oddball UK techno. Having been honing her skills at her party Atone for a while now, it’s great to see her skills hitting new heights.

Ambian

Also in attendance was Sensus co-founder and PB x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme winner Ambian. Part one sees him moving masterfully through some warm-up textures, teasing out some tougher sounds for Paradoks to run with on taking over. When he returned, the sounds took a darker turn, building up nicely for the Saytek’s oncoming assault.

Paradoks

Point Blank student Paradoks is one of the brightest talents currently studying at the school, for his early set, his tech-house rollers delivered a fresh, sharp angle juxtaposed with some murky depth.

As mentioned, student opportunities like these are commonplace at Point Blank, and with any of our DJ Courses you could learn to move the dancefloor like any of these artists. If playing live sounds like your thing, we offer a module in live electronic music as part of the aforementioned degree programme as well as the BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering, also quality assured by Middlesex University. Any questions? Just get in touch by calling +44 20 7729 4884.

Saytek to Headline DJ Mag at Work Presents Point Blank. Full Line-Up Revealed!

The applications were closed earlier this week for entries into our latest DJ mix competition – we wanted to find Point Blank students who could show enough skills to take to the stage at Work Bar for DJ Mag at Work presents Point Blank – and you certainly delivered. We’ve been overwhelmed with the response and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to everyone’s mixes, and now it’s time to announce the winners! We’re also delighted to reveal that the headliner on the night will be Saytek, who will be bringing his mesmeric live show and streaming his set to the world. If you didn’t win, or perhaps didn’t feel the confidence to enter this time, there’s no need to worry – the standard of applications was very high and no matter what level you’re at, you can always check out our DJ courses to help take you to the next level.

There are limited free tickets so make sure you RSVP here if you haven’t already. Here’s a little bit more about each of our artists on the night.

Saytek

UK artist Saytek (aka Joseph Keevill) is one of the electronic music scene’s most in-demand live acts. From multiple shows in Ibiza, at The Terrace of Space (RIP), The Zoo Project and regular shows at fabric London, to being fully embraced by Berlin’s underground scene performing regularly at clubs including Tresor, Golden Gate, Salon – Zur wilder Renate, Chalet, Sisyphos, Kosmonaut, Ipse and more. Saytek has a relentless tour schedule with gigs at some of the best parties and festivals all over Europe. At the time of writing, he’s preparing for doubleheader in Berlin and Frankfurt this weekend (18 & 19 May). We can’t wait to see him bring his wild live show to Work Bar.

Ambian

As the winner of the Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme, we invite Ambian to join us on the bill for his second show with us in the programme after returning from IMS Ibiza. Between his production and his series of nights, Sensus, he’s steadily been building his repertoire and honing his skills over the past couple of years and is set to launch to the next level. For a more in-depth look, check out our recent interview feature.

Imogen

Bouncing from quirky electro to darker techno, Imogen is already seen to be shaping the next generation of electronic music. Pushing her unique sound, she created a platform with her residency at the now-defunct Radar Radio. All who attend her shows bear witness to the way she captures an audience and threads her sets with a captivating narrative. Taking inspiration from the likes of Luke Slater, Defekt and Zenker Brothers, expect this to go off.

Paradoks

Only 21 years old and a little over a year on since his first release, Paradoks has earned the support from Lane 8, Solee, Betoko, Eelke Kleijn, Paco Osuna, Darin Epsilon and more. With releases on Parquet recordings, Paradoks harvests introspective melodies from his self-taught piano playing, combining it with tougher percussive elements. He’s had a couple of number 1 releases on the Beatport progressive house chart and his latest release, the “Eternal EP”, hit the top 6 of all releases on the site. One to watch!

Opportunities like these come up frequently for our student and alumni, for the latest on a weekly basis, make sure you check back with the opportunities section on this blog. if your feeling inspired then why not check out some of our new degree courses, including a fully accredited BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice, and a degree in Music Industry Management. PBLA to Host Free Masterclasses in Mixing and NI Maschine w/ Sweatson Klank and Computo

We continue our run of informative sessions with two new free masterclasses on two consecutive days. The first will see Sweatson Klank (Friends of Friends, Sony, Warp, Ghostly, Brainfeeder & more) give a demonstration of the Art of Mixing programme on Wednesday, May 9th. For the second, production wizard, Native Instruments veteran and composer Computo (worked with Flying Lotus, A-Trak and Zedd) will give a masterclass in NI Maschine ahead of the next LA Native Session: Bars, which is to be held in Mack Sennett Studios, where our PBLA studios are located. Both events are free but places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so head to Eventbrite to RSVP the masterclass in Mixing and Maschine.

Tom Wilson aka Sweatson Klank is currently gearing for the release of his fourth LP ‘Fine Lines’ on Friends of Friends having dropped two EPs on the LA label in the last six months. He has played massive festivals including Coachella, Sonar, Low-End Theory and shared a stage with the likes of Mos Def, Just Blaze, Kode 9, Little Dragon and Flying Lotus. Besides this, he has a wealth of experience in the music industry, working with brands such as Nike, Puma, Reebok, Novation, Ableton and Native Instruments.

Joe ‘Computo’ Caputo is a Hollywood-based producer and sound designer with a serious addiction to modular synthesis. He has been teaching the Sound Design module of our Complete Music Production & Sound Design course at PBLA for over 2 years now, and having worked for 6 years at Native Instruments, he knows pretty much everything there is to know about Maschine. He even trained artists like Zedd, Flying Lotus and A-Trak to use one. Now Computo is focused on modular synth composition and sound design, co-founding the CNTRPNT modular workshop series, as well as being involved in the Voltage Control Lab, plus he’s been working on film scores too.

Both of these events precede the Los Angeles edition of Native Instruments’ ‘Bars’, a global examination of hip-hop and rap focusing on the variations in the cities that host the Native Sessions.

If you’d like to know more about PBLA, you can check out all the courses offered here. If you’d like to ask a question or simply talk to an advisor, please contact us on 323 282 7660.

PBLA Guest Workshop with Jesse Rose (Play It Down, Get Physical, Dubsided)

PBLA students are in for a real treat for our next guest masterclass, as we invite the legend that is Jesse Rose to share his secrets on how to turn your hobby for DJing or bedroom production into a fully-fledged and successful career in the music industry. Given the house and garage producer/dj’s own long, fruitful career in which he’s worked with pretty much everyone, played everywhere, and spent time writing an as-yet-published book on the very subject of this class, there really is no-one with more authority on the matter. Please note, this masterclass is only open to students and graduates of Point Blank! If you’d like to get access to regular guest masterclasses like this, check out our full list of classes in Los Angeles.

With a career spanning a quarter-century, Jessie Rose is in more of a position to talk about longevity in dance music than most. His path and trajectory follow what has become the benchmark by which most people judge the ‘proper’ way to climb the ladder. There is, of course, no such thing, but there are steps you can take as your reputation grows, incrementally or rapidly, which are always a good idea. Trust us when we say Jesse knows them all.

He began by playing parties in Bristol, UK before his productions caught the ear of one Derrick Carter. Jesse wasted no time capitalising on the co-sign from one of the biggest figures in house music and started his own Front Room imprint. Made To Play and Play It Down both followed, and in 2015 he launched his fourth label A-SIDED. His release catalogue is over 100 deep, and he has topped bills at the biggest clubs in every corner of the globe. This is not one to miss.

At Point Blank, these are the kinds of careers we seek to build, and with our mix-and-match courses, you can build the skills that are right for your vision with three courses at a time. Maybe a classic trio of Music Business with Intro to Music Production and Complete DJ? Whatever you choose, we are currently offering free software worth $1,350 with all 3-month courses at PBLA, so there’s never been a better time to enrol. If you have any questions contact a course advisor on 323 282 7660.
