Listen to Point Blank on Pioneer DJ Radio: Guest Mix from Joshua Michael

After an extended layoff, we are back with our regular guest slot with Pioneer DJ Radio. We’ve had a relationship with the station for a minute now and we’re proud to put our students on the radio alongside artists like Slam, Sante and Eats Everything. If you’re a PB student or graduate and think your mixes belong on the biggest stations along with that illustrious company, send them to oliver@pointblankmusicschool.com.

Joshua Michael studied the Music Production Certificate with us back in 2016. He’s been playing since he was just 14. His early interest in electronic music has since developed into a fixation for anything house and techno. With the launch of his own club night upcoming at XOYO and his first release just around the corner, big things are in the pipeline!

Student Opportunity: Apply now for the Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme 2018

We are very excited to announce that we are now taking applications for the 2018 Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme! Read on for all the info you need on how to apply. With the Programme now open once again for 2018, we were delighted to catch up with Gabby to talk about how the past year has been for her since winning the 2017 programme. Check out the video below for the full lowdown.

The Accelerator Programme launched early last year, starting our search for a student or alumnus with the potential to hoist to the top of the industry, using the combined resources and contacts of Point Blank and Pioneer DJ.  The 2017 winner, DJ/Producer Gabby Gunn, enjoyed access to huge industry events such as IMS Ibiza and Amsterdam Dance Event, and was providing a wide range of mix, live performance and networking opportunities across the year.

One year on, Gabby returned to our studio in London to talk us through what she’s been up to over the past year. If you read this blog you will know about a fair few of her exploits already – which included trips to IMS Ibiza and ADE – but as Gabby explains in the video above, many more opportunities presented themselves along the way. Take her set at the BBC Introducing stage at Creamfields for an example, or her recorded performance at the final edition of the much-loved UK institution Secret Garden Party. She also shares some of the networking opportunities that arose over the year, together with access to the latest Pioneer gear.

Our DJ studio at Point Blank London is fully kitted with the latest equipment from Pioneer DJ, including the DJS-1000 sampler released late last year

If you are a student or a recent graduate who has already played a variety of DJ gigs, then you could be this year’s winner. The profile of these gigs doesn’t matter, all we need to see is potential and the drive to succeed – the successful candidate will be catapulted to some of the industry’s highest-profile platforms, so this is not for the faint of heart.

Interested in applying for this exclusive opportunity to fast track your DJ career? You’ll need to send an application to matt@pointblankmusicschool.com by 11th March 2018. Your application should give a full outline of your DJ credentials to date, together with a link to one of your mixes which you feel gives the best representation of your selector and mixing skills. After an initial shortlisting process, the successful candidate will be confirmed in March, with the programme commencing through to December. Please note this opportunity is for Point Blank students and graduates only.

Don’t forget that if you’re not at the level required yet we can help you get there. Take a DJ course with us and get started, or hone your skills with that little bit of guidance. Want to go deeper still, our BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering covers all the bases for you to make it as a musician in today’s industry, so don’t hesitate. As a student you’ll also qualify for this and countless other opportunities too.

Watch our Comprehensive Guide to Setting Up Your DJ Equipment

So you’ve bought your first set of decks, or maybe you’ve finally upgraded your equipment or even just added some CDJs for the first time… happy days! Of course, now you have to set them all up, and despite Pioneer’s continued commitment to making their tools as easy to use as possible, to get the most of out of your new toys you need to set them up properly. Luckily Point Blank’s lead DJ instructor Ben Bristow is on hand to show you both the basics and a few tricks to fully optimize your set-up. NB: Though Ben is using top-of-the-range equipment from Pioneer, much of this video applies to decks and mixers of all makes and models. If you fancy learning to spin tunes, Ben himself teaches many of our DJ Courses in London.

Check out the video above for a comprehensive guide to setting up your DJ equipment. As our lead DJ instructor, Ben Bristow has set up more than his fair share of DJ studios in his time, so you can be sure that if you follow his advice you won’t go far wrong. In the video we cover the basics of which inputs and outputs to use on your mixer, in this case a Pioneer DJM 900 Nexus, along with two Pioneer CDJ 2000 Nexus’. We plug everything into a separate LAN hub too so as to allow for perfectly quantised effects – meaning your mixer will automatically match the tempo of your effects to your tracks. Later we learn the slightly more fiddly trick of enabling the fader start function, allowing you to start and restart a track from its queue point using the crossfader – especially useful for scratch DJing. Another lesser-practised trick is to update the firmware on your CDJs, which will ensure there are no compatibility issues with Rekordbox.

We hope this is a useful tool for anyone setting up new equipment or those wanting to make sure everything is performing optimally. Get loads more advice, and comprehensive instruction in whatever style of DJing you’re interested in, with a DJ Course at Point Blank. We offer these in London, Los Angeles, Ibiza and Mumbai, and if you’re using virtual DJ software you can even study online. For more information or to speak with an admissions advisor, contact us using this form.
