DJ Ravine Reports from IMS Ibiza 2018

Point Blank’s connection with IMS Ibiza runs deep: you may have caught our recent video following the 2018 Accelerator winner and Point Blank student Ambian on his trip to play at IMS in support of Seth Troxler and Flashmob, and you may or may not know that PB students get discounted tickets to the event every year. You probably don’t know what our man DJ Ravine got up to when he accompanied Ambian on his trip this year – but you can find out the video below. We love the white isle so much that last year we opened Point Blank Ibiza, where you can take a two-week intensive course in DJing and production by day and head out into the island’s world-famous nightlife by night – the best way to fully immerse yourself in the culture. The next courses begin in less than a week, so hurry if you would like to snap up the last remaining places.

The International Music Summit in Ibiza is one of the biggest events in the global dance music calendar. Set in the spiritual epicentre of clubland, leading figures and inspirational artists fly in from all over the world to give lectures and host panels on the most important things happening in the industry. It’s a fantastic way to keep up with the latest developments and make sure that, whatever your involvement in music, you stay at the cutting edge of what’s going on. There are loads of masterclasses and workshops too and this year that included our own DJing masterclass with Andrea Oliva.

Of course, a trip to Ibiza wouldn’t be complete with a little partying, and in his video dispatch from IMS, DJ Ravine takes us along to the centrepiece of the event – the Dalt Vila party, this year featuring the likes of Dixon and Maceo Plex. He also shows us around the amazing classrooms and gorgeous surroundings of Point Blank Ibiza.

If you’d like to study with us out there, you have three options, each expertly tailored to fit in with whatever your interests might be. The original DJ/Producer course is perfect if you would like to split your time between making tracks and playing them, giving you a boost to get started in the world of electronic music. Given we’re back for our second year, we also offer an Advanced DJ/Producer course for those with a bit more experience or who perhaps did the original course last year. Expect to fine-tune your skills here and really begin to get creative. Finally, we have the DJ/Radio course, on which you will learn the ins and outs of radio production and presenting as well as how to spin tracks – perfect if what you really want to do is rule the airwaves. Get in touch if you have any questions.

Watch our Full Vlog Series w/ DJ Ravine as he Studies at Point Blank London

Now that his time with us in London has come to an end, its time to look back over DJ Ravine’s studies with us. Over three months, we followed him on his journey with three modules: Intro to Music Production, Music Composition and Sound Engineering, each an element that, as Ravine will tell you, have combined to improve his production significantly. Check out all ten of his video blogs below, don’t forget to check out our London courses for yourself.

When Ravine first got started with us, he confessed that his opinion of his own production prowess was less than stellar. So he picked the three modules that he thought would allow him to improve most quickly, all of which form part of our BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering degree course. Intro to Production, to augment the modest knowledge he already had and to sweep up any essential techniques he may have missed, Music Composition, to give his tracks more direction, and Sound Engineering, which he actually selected accidentally… more on that later.

Throughout his studies, he brought us along for the ride and interviewed instructors and classmates for a special insight into the classroom. Anthony Chapman, his Sound Engineering instructor, takes very little time to convince him of the benefits of a little sound-engineering knowledge too, as his group record an original cover of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’. Linton Bennett supplied constant nuggets of composition tips and mantras, and Tom Glendenning took him through all things Ableton.

Everyone here at Point Blank has enjoyed these videos immensely, so we’d like to say a big thanks to DJ Ravine for putting them together. For all that we try, there’s no way of showing how good our courses are without being there, but these videos give as good a taster as we can achieve. We hope you enjoy learning about the various extra-curricular activities that are constantly going down in and around the school too.

All of Ravine’s modules are part of our flagship BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering, and you can also find them in some shorter courses too, like the Master Diploma. That was our original degree programme here and we’re proud to have a launched a second starting in September, the BA (Hons) In Music Industry Management, in which we teach you all the steps necessary to make strides in a career in music. If you have any questions, please give us a call on 020 7729 4884 or send us an email.

Monthly Round-Up March 2018: Record Labels, DJ Ravine & More

Another month down in this rapidly disappearing year, here we are again rounding up the going’s on here at PB plus. It’s been another good one, too. DJ Ravine, for one, has wrapped up his time spent studying with us and, despite being delighted that he did so well with his studies, we were very sad for the series to finish. We also dropped another essential guide, this time to the labels we see having a big 2018, and took a first look at a very exciting new piece of kit from the mighty Roland. In other exciting news, this week we’ve launched a brand new degree programme! Check out the all new BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice.

First Look at the Roland TR-8S w/ Saytek

What better place to start than our in-house live-performance wizard getting to grips with the latest piece of kit from Roland. When the TR-8 was released in 2014, it opened up the possibilities of the classic 808 and 909 models to a whole new generation of producers, lovingly recreating the classic sounds using modelling and sampling, not to mention circumventing the astronomical prices of second-hand originals. It was a game-changing moment, but how to follow it? Boutique versions of both the 808 and 909 have since appeared, modelled more closely on teh original designs, but the true successor is certainly this, the TR-8S. With new sampling capabilities and an updated interface, there’s a lot to get excited by, and as Saytek showed, its potential for Live Performing is massive. Check out the video for a demonstration.

Point Blank’s Essential Guide to Record Labels in 2018

After last month’s guide to this year’s festivals, we decided to return to the format, turning our gaze this time to the underground record labels that have excited for the year ahead. There are literally hundreds, but in the interest of digestibility we funnelled it down to just these nine. Despite some glaring omissions (Whities, anyone?) we think it’s a decent and relatively broad look at who’s on a hot streak night now. Please delve in.

DJ Ravine – PB Vlog 10: The Final Entry

DJ Ravine invites us to follow him on his studies for the final time. Over the past ten weeks we’ve seen him take on Introduction to Ableton, Sound Engineering and Music Composition courses at our London School. As he catches up with his instructors one last time, in this video we bid farewell to DJ Ravine at Point Blank. It’s been a blast!

Student Success: India Spotlight

If you follow these pages you’ll know we put together a monthly round-up of the students who have been making their mark in their field, and we’re always very proud of the successes of our students. With our second term at our Mumbai kicking off just a few days ago, we wanted to shine a light on some of the super-talented folks from India who have passed through our doors at one point or another with this extra edition of Student Success.

Breaking Into The Music Industry With Nick Halkes, Co-Founder Of XL Recordings

The first entry in a three-part series with Nick Halkes, founder of XL Recordings and Positiva, and manager of Liam Howlett of the Prodigy, Stanton Warriors, Bad Company UK, and more. Filmed during a guest masterclass with music industry students at point Blank London, this video sheds light on Nick’s remarkable determination to find himself in the right places at the right time, going from a modest mobile DJ set-up in Portishead in Somerset to an invite to a Michael Jackson launch party on a yacht in New York.

Point Blank Recommends #49

Once again we could resist throwing our monthly round-up of tracks into the mix. A wide-angle glance at the irresistible releases of recent weeks.

If you enjoy this content, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank – Week 10: Goodbye!

DJ Ravine is back with his final update on his progress with us here at Point Blank London. Over the past ten weeks, we’ve followed him as he studies Intro to Music Production, Music Composition and Sound Engineering. This week it’s time to say goodbye as everyone parties at the open decks night at The Stag’s Head opposite the school. It’s not all partying though, Ravine finds the time to catch up with Tom, his Ableton instructor and Anthony Chapman in Sound Engineering. On the production side, Ravine reckons the eleven-week course here is equivalent to a year and a half of teaching yourself – not a bad rate of learning! Finally, he checked in with Linton Bennett for his last composition 1-2-1, tying everything together with the revelation that, actually, everyone has the basis to learn composition already – just try singing the major scale.

These are all core modules in our BA Hons Music Production and Sound Engineering Degree. If you’ve only just discovered the series, we urge you to check out our YouTube playlist and catch up from the beginning.

One massive, final thank you to DJ Ravine, we’ve absolutely loved tagging along on his studies and we can’t wait to see where he goes from here. As always, you can check out our full list of production courses in London and Online at our website. For more info and to talk to a course advisor, call us on +44 20 7729 4884.

DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank – Week 9: End of Term Assignments

DJ Ravine is back with his penultimate update on his progress with us here at Point Blank London. Over the past nine weeks, we’ve followed him as he studies Intro to Music Production, Music Composition and Sound Engineering, and we’ve watched his production skills improve exponentially. This week it was time to put everything he learnt to the test and complete the projects he’s been working on for weeks. His Intro to Production assignment was submitted already, so this week he checked back for the final time on the cover of ‘Wonderwall’ he and his sound engineering team have been working on, as well as his original composition for Linton in music composition. We’re pleased to be able to announce that he nailed all of his assignments, including getting a distinction for Composition.

These are all core modules in our BA Hons Music Production and Sound Engineering Degree. If you’ve only just discovered the series, we urge you to check out our YouTube playlist and catch up from the beginning.

A big thank you and congrats to DJ Ravine for taking us along with him on this journey. DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank in London! Watch Week Five of his Vlog

A few weeks ago we welcomed Australian DJ and vlogger DJ Ravine to study with us in London. Due to his excellent YouTube channel and series of demos and instructional videos we were delighted to collaborate with him last year on an introduction to Ableton video. We enjoyed it so much that we invited him back to study with us this year, and he kindly agreed to keep us in the updated on his progress on his educational journey. He’s never had any formal training, so he’s studying Intro to Music Production, as well as courses in Music Composition and Sound Engineering. Check out these modules, plus our other combinations of study topics at our London school’s webpage. Here’s week five.

In a jam-packed week, Ravine first sits in with some second-year Sound Engineering students as they record the strings for a project working with Sister Sledge’s disco classic: ‘Thinking of You’. Next, in his own Sound Engineering class, a session musician lays down some drums for their cover project they began last week, a drum and bass version of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis. With another live layer added, the project is beginning to take shape. He was also treated to a lesson in Ableton’s Push 2 with Thomas Glendenning, one of PB’s resident Abelton-certified instructors, showing off some of the new features of Ableton 10, all without using the computer at all.

Next term, all classes will be upgraded to use Ableton 10, so why not enrol today? Take a look at our full list of production courses in London and Online. For more info and to talk to a course advisor, call us on +44 20 7729 4884, and don’t forget to check back next week for the next instalment of Ravine’s vlog.

DJ Ravine Studies at Point Blank in London! Watch Week Four of His Vlog

Four weeks in, here’s his latest video.

This week Ravine takes us along to his Sound Engineering class to get a glimpse at what he and his group have been assigned. First Anthony Chapman gives us a quick lesson on the three most common types of microphone used in music: dynamic, condenser and ribbon mics. Later, we join Ravine at one of the PB-hosted Native Meetups, where producers come and share tips and pointers with instructors and Native Instruments experts. One of those experts, Doug McAvoy shares a brief lowdown on what goes on at these meetups. Finally, we return to Ravine’s studio where we see the end result of he and his group’s remix of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’, using a drum and bass break and some big bass drops.

Check back next week for another edition of DJ Ravine’s vlog with us. Meanwhile, why not take a look at our YouTube channel for more instructional videos, as well as demonstrations and previews.
