Watch Part 3 of our Miniseries: Ableton Live 10 In Depth – Mixing w/ Push 2

In a new series, we take a look at Ableton Live 10 in depth with Thomas Glendenning, one of many of our expert instructors in London and one of just 200 (give or take) certified Ableton trainers in the world. For the second video, the focus is on using Ableton’s amazingly intuitive Push 2 controller which is frankly the best and easiest controller to use with Ableton Live 10, due to the level of integration. Thomas teaches Introduction to Music Production (Ableton) with us here in London which, as well as acting as a standalone course, is an integral part of our degree and diploma programmes, both in London and online.

Watch the video below to watch Thomas create a mix with his demo track. Learn about panning, volume levels, compression and EQ, as well as some tips and tricks to help make the mix as clean as possible.

Want to learn how to use Ableton from expert instructors like Thomas? As well as the ITP course, we offer much longer and comprehensive courses, foremost among them our new BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice, and BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering. You can also take the latter as an online degree from anywhere in the world. We offer courses covering production techniques like these at all of our schools, which are completed by Los AngelesIbiza and Mumbai. Any questions? Please get in touch.

Watch the First Video in Our New Series: Ableton Live 10 In Depth – Using Capture

In a new series, we take a look at Ableton Live 10 in depth with Thomas Glendenning, our resident Ableton whizz in London and certified Ableton trainer. For the first video, the focus is on perhaps the most simple new feature of Live 10, and almost certainly the most revolutionary: Capture. It allows you to record midi sounds after-the-fact, even if you forget to hit record, opening a world of possibility for freer jamming. Thomas teaches Introduction to Music Production (Ableton) with us here in London which, as well as acting as a standalone course, is an integral part of our degree and diploma programmes, both in London and online.

After a short intro from Thomas, we dive into the demonstration, which is directly taken from the course materials for Intro to Music Production (Ableton). As we can see, it allows for a more organic way of recording sounds by eliminating the need to figure out exactly what you might have played while jamming, also taking off some pressure when recording a take. It does this by constantly listening to your session, as long as the midi track is record-armed. It will automatically guess your tempo and a suggestion as to where you want to loop the clip, and you can even overdub using capture as well, simply hitting the button again after playing over your original clip. Watch the video for some more in-depth information about what it can do.

Watch our Deconstruction of ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ at Ableton Loop, Berlin

Welcome to our latest deconstruction, where Point Blank’s Lead Course Developer Ski Oakenfull takes a track apart and rebuilds it piece by piece. Recorded at Ableton Loop where Point Blank featured as a partner on the programme, Ski went to town on one of our favourite tracks ever made, and perhaps the best single of the 90’s: Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’. We use these deconstructions to teach students about production techniques, arrangement and composition, and there’s plenty more where this came from in our course materials. If you’d like to learn how to use all of the techniques shown here and more, enrol in one of our Music Production courses, we’ll have you creating your own tracks in no time.

So last year at Ableton’s industry summit, Loop, we were invited to demonstrate what Point Blank is all about. What better way to do so, we thought, than have our lead course developer deconstruct one of the greatest tracks pressed to wax in the way only he can. ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ was a revelation on release in 1991 and continues to be so today, a triple-threat of the band’s vision, Will Malone’s iconic string arrangement, and Shara Nelson’s gorgeous lyrics and delivery. Interestingly, as we learn in the video, the track features no bassline.

Getting into the deconstruction then, Ski samples the break from JJ Johnson’s ‘Parade Strut’, and the vocal snippet that appears throughout from the rather obscure ‘Planetary Citizen’ by John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The string parts he composes from Ableton’s own in-built String Ensemble pack, and the bell riff he grabs from an old hotel bell. For those incredible vocals, he enlists the help of Valerie Etienne of Galiano and, lately, Jamiroquoi, who recorded some acapellas. Finally, with a few extra elements thrown in, we hear Ski’s completed version, and the results are quite remarkably similar. Listen to the original below and see what you think.

If you’re not so keen on production and rather see yourself writing these kinds of hooks or working on your voice, Point Blank can help you there too. Check out our classes on singing and songwriting. If you have any queries about anything school related, please contact us or call +44 20 7729 4884.

Learn How to Create a Track in the All-New Ableton Live 10

So here it is. It’s been almost 5 years since Ableton Live 9 was released, but the Berlin-based DAW powerhouse have finally announced their long-awaited updated. It is the programme of choice for many producers and lauded for its streamlined workflow, uncluttered interface and deceptive sophistication. We’ve long been admirers and partners of theirs, and even offer Ableton-specific courses at our London school: in Production and Performance. Take a look at our whole range of production courses here.

As you can imagine, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on the new version to see what tweaks and upgrades have been added to Live’s 10th iteration. It’s not available to buy until early next year, but our lead course developer Ski Oakenfull was given time to have a root around its new functionality for the day. The result was this first look video. Enjoy!

The video is a short tour of Ableton Live 10’s new functions, both in the DAW itself and in conjunction with the Ableton Push controller. In it, Ski talks us through cosmetic upgrades, before building a track from four samples, embellished with some new instruments and effects native to the programme. Some of the more notable features include the Capture function: allowing you to record the last sequence played without hitting record; some new drum synths and an Echo effect that can work as a Space Echo; plus the Wavetable, a new dual oscillator wavetable synthesiser. Some of the most exciting upgrades are undoubtedly in conjunction with the Ableton Push, with envelopes and EQ now graphically visible on the unit itself.

As we have come to expect from Ableton, the new version represents a steady but significant progression on from the previous, subtly tweaking to increase intuitiveness rather than re-inventing the wheel. We hope you enjoy the video and join us in counting down the days until its release in 2018.

Ski Oakenfull

Ski Oakenfull is the lead course developer here at Point Blank Music School, and along with our other fantastic developers and instructors, he has ensured that our courses are of the highest order. Check out our BA (Hons) in Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree for our most comprehensive programme, or take a look at our full list of London music production courses if you’re interested in something shorter. If London is not an option, take a look at our online courses, with which we’re currently offering 25% off select courses. We also have schools in Ibiza, LA and Mumbai.
