Watch the First Video in Our New Series: Ableton Live 10 In Depth – Using Capture

In a new series, we take a look at Ableton Live 10 in depth with Thomas Glendenning, our resident Ableton whizz in London and certified Ableton trainer. For the first video, the focus is on perhaps the most simple new feature of Live 10, and almost certainly the most revolutionary: Capture. It allows you to record midi sounds after-the-fact, even if you forget to hit record, opening a world of possibility for freer jamming. Thomas teaches Introduction to Music Production (Ableton) with us here in London which, as well as acting as a standalone course, is an integral part of our degree and diploma programmes, both in London and online.

After a short intro from Thomas, we dive into the demonstration, which is directly taken from the course materials for Intro to Music Production (Ableton). As we can see, it allows for a more organic way of recording sounds by eliminating the need to figure out exactly what you might have played while jamming, also taking off some pressure when recording a take. It does this by constantly listening to your session, as long as the midi track is record-armed. It will automatically guess your tempo and a suggestion as to where you want to loop the clip, and you can even overdub using capture as well, simply hitting the button again after playing over your original clip. Watch the video for some more in-depth information about what it can do.

Want to learn how to use Ableton from expert instructors like Thomas? As well as the ITP course, we offer much longer and comprehensive courses, foremost among them our new BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice, and BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering. You can also take the latter as an online degree from anywhere in the world. We offer courses covering production techniques like these at all of our schools, which are completed by Los Angeles, Ibiza and Mumbai. Any questions? Please get in touch.

Making a Bassline Banger with DJ Q: ‘Time to Shine’ Breakdown in Ableton

For our latest track breakdown video, we were blessed by the presence of a true UK legend in DJ Q, who along with the likes of T2 and Paleface, was the face of bassline when it blew up from the north of England in the mid-2000s. To this day, he is consistently releasing UK Bass bangers spanning grime, garage and of course bassline. For this session, Q dropped in to our London studios to walk us through his latest single ‘Time to Shine’. This track includes plenty of the DJ Q signature sound, also leaning towards the classic sounds from the early garage era pioneered by the likes of Todd Edwards. He get’s pretty in-depth here, so if any of this goes over your head but you’d like to be able to layer tracks to this intricate level, why not have a look at some of our music production courses in London.

‘Time to Shine’ is out today via Butterz. Hear it here. Get it here.

Some 14 years after he began making his name as the host of 1Xtra’s UKG M1X show, DJ Q remains a hugely in-demand club DJ. This proximity to the dancefloor was inevitably the inspiration behind the track, given how much traction vocal tracks have been getting when he plays out and the way he’s chopped them up is designed to emulate those classic garage producers mentioned before. We learn the vocal used in this track was taken from a sample pack, before receiving the DJ Q treatment.

Learn exactly what DJ Q’s set-up consists of, as well as how he organised his workflow for this particular project. ‘Time to Shine’ is quite representative of Qs workflow in general, with several steps and tricks revealed to be favourites of his. We learn of his fondness for many of Ableton 10s new features and some of his favourite plugins including the Endless Smile filter. Qs grouping techniques are extremely useful to know and he gives good insight into his mixing process, taking special care not to muddy the waters by keeping different elements hitting different frequencies.

It was an absolute pleasure having DJ Q with us in London. if you are as inspired as we are by his deconstruction, and want to learn how you too could do what he does, we’ve just launched our new degree programme, the B.A. (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice. We also offer a degree course in Music Production and Sound Engineering online, for those of you outside the UK.

DJ Ravine is back with his weekly update on his progress with us here at Point Blank London as he studies Intro to Music Production, as well as courses in Music Composition and Sound Engineering. We’re six weeks in now and after last week’s episode, which was heavy on the sound engineering, this week he shifts his focus back to composition. If you’re just joining us for this series, check out our YouTube playlist and get yourself caught up. Plus, get the lowdown on all of our London courses at ourLondon school’s webpage.

It’s been another busy week for Ravine, as he swung by our latest open day to catch Ski Oakenfull give one of his famous deconstructions live. The track in question was Calvin Harris’ ‘Slide’ ft. Frank Ocean and Migos, which you can watch here. After a catch up with Ski, Ravine takes us into his composition class where we join Linton Bennet once again as he talks us through the intricacies of hooks and riffs. Finally, Ravine puts this newfound knowledge to use with one of his own tracks he’s been working on, and even gives a short demo of Ableton’s Simpler in doing so.

As always, thanks to DJ Ravine for taking the time to put this together. Feeling inspired? Take a look at our full list of production courses in London and Online. Sandunes ‘Crystal Pink’ Track Breakdown in Ableton Live

In this Ableton Live tutorial, former Point Blank student Sanaya, a.k.a. Sandunes, broke down her acclaimed track ‘Crystal Pink’, from her recent album, Downstream. In the video, Sanaya provides an overview of her creative process in Ableton Live, as well as demonstrating how she builds and structures her project files. BEAP is a Max for Ableton Live application that offers huge implications for virtual modular sound design. In this video, Point Blank instructor Dan Herbert takes us through the basics of sound manipulation in this incredibly diverse sound design environment.

Ableton Live Tutorial: Using Link in Live

As music production processes become increasingly virtual, there is an increasing demand for virtual collaborative spaces, where multiple remote users can work on single projects at once. ‘Link’ for Ableton Live is an application that allows for these collaborative spaces, where several Ableton users can operate on an instance of Live in real-time. In this tutorial, Ableton certified instructor, Freddy Froggs, takes us through how to use this incredible feature.

Watch A Beginner’s Guide to Making a Track in Ableton w/ DJ Ravine & Saytek

When it comes to making tunes, the biggest step is always the first. With so many tools available, jargon and acronyms to make the Pentagon blush and millions of hours of tutorials and tracks being released, getting started can feel overwhelming. Even if you get as far as purchasing a DAW (that’s digital audio workstation – things like Logic, Fruity Loops or Ableton), you load it up and are confronted with what looks like something you would find of the Starship Enterprise. The truth is that developments are such that making music has never been simpler, and all you need is a simple starting point from a reliable source. Well, with our decades of experience, we believe there’s no more reliable source than Point Blank Music School, so we teamed up with Australian blogger DJ Ravine to bring you the simplest entry reference we can. We called on one of our most experienced expert instructors, Saytek, to take Ravine and our viewers through the building blocks, using one of the most complete and intuitive DAWs around: Ableton Live. Note that this video consists of the very basics, and students with us at our schools like the one in London or online, can expect complete tuition into the complexities of making electronic music.

In the video, Saytek, who teaches music production and live performance and Point Blank, only uses tools that are freely available to demonstrate the rudiments of making a track. He starts with the kick, which you can think of as the foundation for the kind of house track made here, using one of the aforementioned sample packs and some editing tricks to make it his own. Hi-hats and claps are added from the built-in core instruments on Ableton, as well as a bassline. From there he completes his basic loop with a synth lead, and we learn some basic elements of creating tension by dropping sections in and out of the track. To follow along or have a go yourself, all you need to do is download the free trial of Ableton Live, and download some free sounds from us to help you get started.

When he’s not instructing students on how to build tracks and live sets on Ableton and beyond, Saytek is constantly pushing boundaries within his own productions and live shows. For a taste of what he does as an artist and as an instructor, take a look at this instructor profile video. Ravine is a DJ and vlogger who’s been carving up turntables and sharing tutorials since the very early days of YouTube. making the most of the site’s original 10-minute maximum video length, his “Ten Minute Mix” series has catapulted his channel to where it now lies with 450k+ subscribers.

DJ Ravine

This is just the very tip of the iceberg. If you want to learn production back to front, then look no further than our BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering, also available online. We have shorter courses available in London, as well as production courses at our school in LA, so you can study with us, wherever you are. Learn How to Create a Track in the All-New Ableton Live 10

So here it is. It’s been almost 5 years since Ableton Live 9 was released, but the Berlin-based DAW powerhouse have finally announced their long-awaited updated. It is the programme of choice for many producers and lauded for its streamlined workflow, uncluttered interface and deceptive sophistication. We’ve long been admirers and partners of theirs, and even offer Ableton-specific courses at our London school: in Production and Performance. Take a look at our whole range of production courses here.

As you can imagine, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on the new version to see what tweaks and upgrades have been added to Live’s 10th iteration. It’s not available to buy until early next year, but our lead course developer Ski Oakenfull was given time to have a root around its new functionality for the day. The result was this first look video. Enjoy!

The video is a short tour of Ableton Live 10’s new functions, both in the DAW itself and in conjunction with the Ableton Push controller. In it, Ski talks us through cosmetic upgrades, before building a track from four samples, embellished with some new instruments and effects native to the programme. Some of the more notable features include the Capture function: allowing you to record the last sequence played without hitting record; some new drum synths and an Echo effect that can work as a Space Echo; plus the Wavetable, a new dual oscillator wavetable synthesiser. Some of the most exciting upgrades are undoubtedly in conjunction with the Ableton Push, with envelopes and EQ now graphically visible on the unit itself.

As we have come to expect from Ableton, the new version represents a steady but significant progression on from the previous, subtly tweaking to increase intuitiveness rather than re-inventing the wheel. We hope you enjoy the video and join us in counting down the days until its release in 2018.

Ski Oakenfull

Ski Oakenfull is the lead course developer here at Point Blank Music School, and along with our other fantastic developers and instructors, he has ensured that our courses are of the highest order.
